Bathroom thoughts please

My bathroom is awful. Its boring and uninviting and somehow feels unclean.
I have a plain white suite, shelf by sink with toothbrushes and bubble bath on plus a few bathtime reading books. Then a shelf /windowsill with cleaning stuff in nice flowery trug and two square wicker baskets with mine and my DH bits in.
Should I put pictures up on wall? (Will they get steam damaged though ?)
Anyone got any thoughts on making it a better more luxurious space?!

I used to have pictures in mine. What colour is the wall? If tiled, you can always get some paint and decorate them. Colourful shower curtain helps cheer it up too.

Thanks - Walls are white and have blue shower curtains but they're nothing special - maybe I should invest in a nicer shower curtain?!?
Pictures could be the thing then but Im not keen on the whole bathroom 'nautical' theme?! Should I go for 'self deprecating/jokey'?!?

I would have a mirrored cabinet over the sink (or whatever cabinet wouldwork in the space you have) rather than anything on shelves. A nice plant, orchid, fancy candles, diffuser etc could tart it up a bit (and make it smell nice)

Personally I don't like shower curtains and would always go for a glass screen, but its not really about what I like!

Oohh candles on shelf sounds lovely !! Will investigate cabinet then!

Be careful with candles, I lit mine and for some reason they really smoked, I ended up having to repaint the walls and wash the tiles, everything was black!

A few brightly coloured towels in your favourite colour, folded in the fancy Anthea Turner type way; the odd matching candle in same colour, then buy scented bubble baths from supermarkets (don't need expensive brands) and decant into tall glass stopper jars (eg Kilners).
A small wicker basket to keep your favourite paperbacks or a few magazines tidy for when lounging in the bath, and a little soap dish in a matching colour to hold a one or two (or five or six.....) decadent truffles to enjoy whilst in the bubbles.
Keep truffles in kitchen obviously before bath.
Ok, off to run one now!

You say you don't like a nautical theme, but it might be worth trying to identify a theme you do like. I'm not very good at this but I'm thinking along the lines of home spa, fun and funky..?

If you're worried about damp for pictures, how about something ceramic on the walls? We have fish, lots of ideas here.

Without a doubt you need covered storage. Unless bathrooms are luxuriantly styled in a "theme" of some sort, a bog-standard bathroom looks best being clinically tidy.

Everything should be tidied away in a cabinet exepting one toothbrush pot with toothbrushes in (for convenience) and a nice bottle of handsoap.

Invest in matching towels and bathmat.

A white cabinet is best in a white bathroom, but a mirrored one can look nice. If it's a small bathroom, Argos do a super chrome mirrored corner cabinet which is not expensive.

There is NO PLACE for displaying cleaning products in a bathroom no matter how flowery the trug! Either put them in a cabinet or store them downstairs. Ideally you would just have some antibacterial wipes in the bathroom and save the other cleaning stuff for the big clean. Hide cleaning cloths and gloves behind the toilet.

If you have space, you can get small freestanding cupboards for bathrooms, in which you can hide all your products and towels. If not then keep the towels neat (you can erect a towel rack on the wall for folded towels). Remove all the bathtime reading books and anything unnecessary from the bathroom altogether. Books go on a shelf elsewhere in the house, you take one in at bathtime and take it out again Smile simples.

Removing all this gear will cut down dramatically on cleaning time. An antibac wipe or two will do most of it.

Have to disagree with previous poster about decluttering - bathroom is best place in the house for plants, and they can look really good.

Alwayscheerful · 11/07/2013 08:58

I agree a glass screen looks better but a new top quality white shower curtain will look good.

Get rid of all the clutter behind a mirror fronted cabinet one, buy one from bathstore which hides the actual cabinet.

No to candles, I used expensive ones in my new bathroom and they left a grey film all over my white tiles and grout.

Buy new towels and bathmats, in a contrasting colour or neutral shade.

Plants can look nice if you have a windowsill, other than that all you should see if some nice hand wash from TK Max and a basket of rolled up face cloths. If you have nice dressing gowns ensure you have nice robe hooks to display them on.
