Help, the sink is blocked!

I'm not v good at housework or practical things, so really need some help with this... The water in the bath is not draining away, it's been a problem for a while and this weekend I tried putting veet down the plughole and then my sister's boyfriend put drain cleaner down it. This seems to have made it worse, I had a bath an hour ago and the water has only half drained away. Apart from calling a plumber, any ideas as to what I can do...?

Can you unravel a wire coathanger and poke it down the holes? Be very careful though, those drain cleaners are normally very caustic so wear gloves.

I use a drain snake thing, as above on the same principle you need sturdy wire (eg wire hanger) and something 'catchy' on the end, like velcro, helps. This attaches to hairs and whatnot down the plughole.

Now, what kind of plug is it? Having put cleaner down it already I'm assuming it's not one which has an attached cover or you already detached it - but if it does and you haven't then that unscrews really easily by turning it. That then exposes the plughole completely. Otherwise in standard plugholes you can often pull them up to full expose.

If not, the wire stuff should still work. This is the main issue really, as bath plugholes tend to get blocked with hairs mostly.

What type of cleaner did you use? Mr Muscle has worked wonders on all manner of issues we've had over decades, hairs/fats etc (ick). It's more costly as the whole bottle goes in one use but it's great.

Also don't just tackle the bath - also go for the sink in the bathroom (assuming there is one). We once had a drainage issue and it turned out that both the sink plughole and bath plughole had to be cleared in order for the bath to drain properly. There were connected somehow.

Finally, get loads of cheap bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. Chuck down some soda, then some vinegar, it will all bubble up then go down again. Leave for 5-10mins, pour a kettle of boiled water down the plughole. Repeat. And repeat. And repeat. And... etc. I had issues in one place I lived (previous tenants Confused) and used a pot of bicarb and a bottle of vinegar on the kitchen sink. As in all of it, and it wasn't as bad as your bath sounds.

However I'm not expert so I'm assuming industrial amounts of bicarb and vinegar won't massively ruin anything but I can't make any guarantees - Google! It's fine for regular cleaning.

Thanks! Will try coathanger first and see if that works...

Buy a sink pump. they're better than a plunger.

Also buy a couple of bags of Wshing Soda Crystals from the laundry aisle (not Caustic Soda, which eats skin and eyeballs.)

Observe how the bath panel is removed for access to the waste trap. You may need to take it off and clean it out. Practicing on the sink and basin will build your confidence.

If you have long hair look in hardware shops for a hair catcher that goes in the plughole

I take the cover off mine and twirl an old fork down there like I'm trying to eat spaghetti... It's always disgusting...

PigletJohn · 10/07/2013 09:35

You mean it doesn't taste as good as real spaghetti?

If you leave it for a while will the rest of the water slowly drain down so that you have got an empty plughole?

If so, when it is empty, put down the plug an entire can of bicarbonate of soda, just pour the powder down the plug. Wait 5 mins. Then pour a bottle of vinegar down afterwards (it will react with the baking soda and fizz so be careful).

It might take a couple of hours but this has always worked for me. Official quantities here under blocked drains, but I just shove a packet of each down.

Once when the sink and the bath were both completely blocked I used it and nothing seemed to happen for about 8 hours, then there was a large bang in the middle of the night, followed by a few pops further down the pipe, huge sucking noises and working plumbing was restored!

Oh God it's getting worse and now my mum is dying. I can't deal with this right now. I wish I had a man! ( they always seem to know what to do in these situations....)
