water filter recommendations?

I drink lots of water, currently bought in bottles as I don't like the taste out of the tap where we live. I'm starting to have a conscience about the amount of plastic its generating so I need to change my habits.
I suspect I just need a filter jug that I can leave on the side or in the fridge in summer.
I know Brita is the big brand name - is that the best one to go for?
Also in the long run its all about the cartridges and the cost of them, is there anything to watch out for - a quick look on argos and its mind boggling the number of different ones!
Any recommendations from people that use a water filter jug?

I use a Brita jug and I would say its probably best to go for one of those as its so easy to get the cartridges when you need them and Amazon often do fairly good prices on them (or Tesco when they're on offer).

It does make a big difference (I can tell the difference when DP accidentally makes tea straight from the kettle instead of using filtered water).

I have a large jug as then there is enough filtered water to fill a pan for pasta/rice etc, whereas the old one I had (slimline to fit in fridge door) you had to pour then refill and wait to get enough water to fill a pan or make more than a couple of cups of tea. It is quite heavy when full though, so if you want DCs to be able to lift it to pour a drink go for a smaller one.

Thanks - useful to know about Amazon for deals.
Good point about a decent size for kettle - actually don't like water chilled unless its a really hot day, so probably best to look for one that will look good on the kitchen counter rather than designed for the fridge. This is why I turn to MN for things I wouldn't think of!

We have a Brita jug and it's great. I also have one of those new brita water bottles and it's ok for when out and about.

You're so right to want something that looks good -I've two no longer in use and presently using smallish Kenwood as don't always filter water for heating. Boots filters seem to be currently best price, and fit most models (as do Classic Brita) but these filters are £4.50 each at Tesco, almost twice as much as Morrison's current deal, so worth considering. Can't tell difference in quality myself.

There isn't a spec of limescale in my kettle ever since I started filling it with filtered water from the Brita jug and not the tap. This was nearly a year ago, to me that means that I've stopped drinking all the horrible white bits from the bottom of the kettle!
Very happy with a slim Brita jug that fits in fridge door, as I like my water cold :-)
