White plastic chopping boards

Please help. My numerous white chopping boards are discoloured and knife scarred. Is there anything that can spruce them up? I tried Milton but it did nothing Hmm i do put them in the dishwasher so they are clean but discoloured.

White and plastic, therefore crap. Throw them away and buy the cheapy ones from Sainsburys - couple of quid each - so they can get as scarred and stained as you like, then replace them.

I used to buy cheap ones regularly because of this. I have a couple of wooden ones which weather much better so over time am now replacing the plastic ones with wood. Can't dishwasher them but they are much nicer than ugly stained, knife marked plastic ones!

I decided to replace mine because they looked like that and I decided I had more than necessary. Now I have one wooden bread board for bread and one white plastic board for cutting up veg and sometimes fruit. (No meat or fish in our house). Eventually when the white board gets too damaged I'll replace it. I don't have a dishwasher.

we have a couple of small glass ones, they don't get scratched or marked.

PigletJohn · 15/06/2013 19:34

glass ones damage the knives, which is worse.

If you have a dishwasher and put them through each time, they should not be stained. You could soak with a denture tablet or two if not.

ChasingSquirrels · 15/06/2013 19:36

does it matter? you know they are clean. they are chopping boards, not works of art.
(mine has got to be over 20 years old as ex-H had it at uni)

glass chopping boards are awful. Noisy too! And like piglet said, blunt knives.

I buy the plastic ones from Ikea, they last ages and are cheap enough to replace once 'done' - but I have to say Ive had latest one YEARS!

Have also got a large wooden block for bread and keep separate plastic board for meat.

I buy them from ikea and they get stained in the dishwasher. I think because we eat a lot of tomato based sauces. I put them in the dishwasher when I've used them and then in the cupboard so it's not like they are on display and so I really don't mind. I have had some red ones from ikea before which of course didn't show the reddish stains if that helps.

When I bleach dishcloth I wipe over the white board and leave it to dry for as long as possible - any stains come off with Cif or similar.

TallulahBetty · 15/06/2013 20:51

Lemon juice.

Betty5313 · 16/06/2013 07:57

we started using our glass ones because the white plastic damaged our knives! think I am definitely the odd one out though.

Leave them in the sun to fix the discolouration. If you can find any sun. One they get very knife scarred, bin them.

That's not necessarily true - it's dishwashing them with tomatoey stuff that discolours them.
