a good, but not non-stick, frying pan?

Yesterday a friend was telling me how irresponsible I am to use a non-stick frying pan (the DCs eat eggs almost every morning) anyway, I see her point and I am about to throw out our non-stick frying pan. Do I need to get a stainless steel pan and season it with hot oil or is there something else which is non-stick but non-toxic? I am trawling the Lakeland website at the moment. They have "ceramica" pans which might be OK?

stainless pans will always stick and there is nothing you can do about it.

You could get an iron one and build up a good layer of old fat in in, but you should wipe it clean with paper, not wash it, and never put it in a dishwasher.

You need strong arms and hands, but especially wrists, to use an iron pan.

what makes you think non-stick is harmful?

Ooh I'd love to know. No idea if non-stick is harmful, but I do know even the expensive stuff comes off and therefore, we eat it, which seems all wrong to me

I have a stainless steel Prestige one which was a wedding present 20 odd years ago, which has served me well, but I could do with a bigger one now I'm feeding teenage boys.

Piglet is right in that it isn't non-stick, therefore food sticks, but not if you use it right Grin

Secret is to get the pan really hot before adding any food and keep it moving.

Believe it or not, my best ever frying pans came from Lidl. I bought them on a recommendation from a MNetter and they are absolutely fabulous. I've had them for a couple of years now and no sign of peeling at all - and I often put them through the dishwasher! They are really sturdy and excellent quality.

There are some new ones that fit the bill - non-stick and not harmful. They're white inside and I'm not sure where you'd buy them... (unhelpful!). My brother got me one from portugal, they were selling them on the street (JML type of thing). He's all into eco / non-toxic stuff and apparentely these tick all the boxes.

I'll have a google to see if I can find them.

Homebase & asda sell the jml ones

It's this.
Reviews aren't great.... but so far I'm happy with mine. I've used it maybe 10 times, always wash it in the diswasher and it's still non-stick. Although I never use it with no oil at all - always add a bit of olive oil to everything...
