Can anyone advise on how to deter local cats from crapping in my garden?!

Just moved into a new place with a small courtyard patio with raised beds, however only just realised they are full of cat shitShock

Any advice desperately needed, thanks!

You can buy this stuff that smells like garlic and sprinkle it on garden; supposed to stop them coming in. Need some for my front garden so will let you know when I find it! Smile

BinarySolo · 31/05/2013 13:01

I read (on here I think!) that cat are deterred by Jayes fluid. Might smell a bit more pleasant than the garlic option!

Peel from any citrus fruit with a few drops of euculiptus oil. I heard this on the radio from a man from what was the cat protection league and it worked in my garden.

PigletJohn · 01/06/2013 12:36

buy your own cat, give him a litter area or dug patch, he will keep the others out.

My raised beds are cat and bird-free, using twiggy branches in soil means no space for cat-bums and they don't look too bad until plants grow and spread.

dukester · 04/06/2013 10:52

I tried the garlic powder stuff and it only worked until it rained I hate having to clean it up makes me so cross. I have a part paved area and they have even started ppoing on that too which I have been bleeching regularly which seems to deter them but you cant pour bleach on a flowerbed/grass etc .

dukester · 04/06/2013 10:53

am going to try the eyuculiptus oil.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 04/06/2013 10:56

I use either twiggy hedge trimmings or orange peel in my veg beds, neither is very attractive and the twigs are a bit of a pain as you have to keep lifting them on and off as you garden, but they do work.

ariane5 · 04/06/2013 15:06

We have this problem and it drives me mad. On a hot day the garden just smells of cat shit and dcs can't play out there untill I have cleaned it.

I still worry though that there will be germs on the grass/flowerbeds and they will get ill.

Everytime I look out the kitchen window there a cat in the garden. 3 are regular visitors.
I am going to try the citrus peel and oil. Apparently broken eggshells work too so will try that.

Sonic cat scarer work really well!

LilMissSunshine9 · 04/06/2013 20:10

Hi

I purchased this and used it and now I don't get cats in my garden at all. It smells strongly of citrus so a cheaper alternative is to put down lemon and/ or orange peels.

I also planted lilies they never come near them because they know they are dangerous for them if they ingest any lilies. I didn't purposefully buy lilies knowing they were dangerous for them before I get ranted at - I love lilies and it was only til I bought some at B&Q i noticed on the label it now says its dangerous for cats.

Our neighbours were all having terrible problems with cats crapping in their front gardens whereas ours was pristine. We put it down to the fact that we have a bird feeder in the front garden and frequently put out scraps for the birds and the cats view our garden as a place to hunt so they don't crap there. Might be worth a try?

Raaraathenoisybaby · 04/06/2013 20:28

I bought something in a hardware store that looks like slug pellets and kind of smells like disinfectant or something. It worked really well you just have to re do it every couple months.
However I ran out and I've just dug over my front garden - instant cat loo Hmm
I have tea tree and eucalyptus oils - do you just sprinkle it neat?

Fluffycloudland77 · 05/06/2013 07:11

Please no jeyes fluid, it's toxic to cats and can kill them.

Cats do not know to avoid to avoid lilies, if the pollen gets on the fur and they ingest it their kidneys fail in hours.

Cats like fresh dug soft earth so densely plant the beds and scatter sharp grit over the soil inbetween plants.

Failing that buy a super soaker and soak them, I'd rather have a soaked cat than a dead one.

Raaraathenoisybaby · 05/06/2013 08:41

Ha ha dd would love a super soaker! I shall purchase one Grin
This morning I screamed blue murder at a dainty British blue attempting to poo on my garden. It was a stress reliever and no cats were harmed Grin

tabbycat15 · 07/06/2013 12:55

There used to be some stuff called 'Get Off My Garden'. They were crystals that you scattered & were ok if it rained. They smelt citrusy but worked. Make sure you remove all traces of cat poo then put crystals down. Cats will return to the same place if their scent is there.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 10/06/2013 14:51

We had the same problem when we mived into our current house. I put cocktail sticks in any areas of uncovered soil.

They seemed not to like getting their arses poked by them and soon buggered off elsewhere!

Raaraathenoisybaby · 10/06/2013 15:28

Get off my garden did nothing to deter them here! However inspired by this thread I dumped a bottle of tea tree oil and a bottle of eucalyptus all over the bare soil a few days ago - success!!!
