How often do you change your sheets-not wash them but change for a new set?

Idly musing this morning. I wash our bed sheets once a week but I wait till they're washed and dried and then put them back on, rather than putting on a different set. There's nothing wrong with our sheets, but I'm bored...

Is it frivolous to buy more just to change it up a bit?! I'm thinking I could put on a different set for each season, maybe white in summer, our current green in autumn, something floral in spring and darker in winter Blush

I need to get a life, right?

I have two sets on the go for each bed so I don't have to immediately wash a set as soon as the bed is stripped. I like the idea of changing colour with the season though.

Roseland · 29/05/2013 09:05

We were doing the same as you (weekly wash, putting same set straight back on). Then our washing machine broke with the bedding in it so we couldn't use it that day. I did an emergency dash to the shops for a back-up set. They are both white though and I love your idea of changing bedding with the season! I do think we are very boring. I could see myself getting something very tacky for the December period though...think Disney xmas :-)

CockyFox · 29/05/2013 09:06

Errm
I've got loads of sets, i change them every week. The DC's have loads as well what do you do if one of your children is sick or if you and DH make a mess and need fresh ones in the night?

whattodoo · 29/05/2013 09:08

I've had two sets exactly the same which I've been using since the mid nineties!

I recently decided to get some new sets. But now I've got them, I don't like them! My dilemma is to get used to then for the next 20 years or be completely frivolous and get new again despite my current linen being less than 2 weeks old?

bigTillyMint · 29/05/2013 09:08

Like cocky, we have a few sets and change every time we wash them.

Another set would make your life easierSmile

notso · 29/05/2013 09:11

We've got two sets for regular use, one on one in the wash.

We also have a Christmas set Blush it's brushed cotton and DH loves it!

Pascha · 29/05/2013 09:11

I've got at least half a dozen sets and plenty of plain sheets/pillowcases. I just strip the bed and remake it later in the day with something else. The bedding goes in the laundry queue and sometimes is a day or two before it reaches the machine.

MirandaWest · 29/05/2013 09:14

I have two sets so I don't have to wash the sheets the same day. Have had current sets about 2.5 years and nearly 2 years so considering something different but will probably keep these for a few years.

Roseland · 29/05/2013 09:16

Our DC have more than one set. That is definitely needed. I am intrigued by the Christmas set...I could definitely be persuaded to buy an extra set for then! Where do you find such things??

TiggerWearsATriteSmile · 29/05/2013 09:25

I have several sets.
They are all varying shades of white or cream.

Coloured bed linen is just wrong.

AntoinetteCosway · 29/05/2013 09:29

Cocky we do have extra fitted sheets for DD, and a couple of spare sleeping bags, as her stuff gets washed more frequently due to drool/wee/vomit/etc!

I hadn't thought of the washing machine breaking. That sounds like an excellent excuse reason to go shopping...

I have 3 sets for each bed. One washing, one wearing, one airing as my mother taught me.

aufaniae · 29/05/2013 09:49

There was a thread a while ago where a poster said she bought new sets of sheets, and binned the old ones every few months IIRC (actually in the bin, not recycled / charity shopped). She reckoned everyone she knew did it and was surprised that everyone posting here thought it pretty extreme! I think she decided to donate them in the future.

I'd say you're at the other extreme. Having two sets of bedding per bed isn't wasteful, it's prudent. Definitely a great excuse to go shopping. enjoy :)

FWIW we have two proper sets for our bed, plus loads of mis-matched duvets / sheets which were once part of a set, not quite sure how we got here! We also seem to have 9 (yes 9!) single sets for DS's bed, which I accept is a tad excessive! We've overbought, plus relatives have bought yet more as presents.

AntoinetteCosway · 29/05/2013 10:15

Crikey!! Well I don't think I'll go that far but I will definitely be doing some sheet browsing this weekend :)

I have two sets on a weekly rotation, both white. I really dislike coloured bedlinen in my room as it's quite dark anyway and anything other than white makes it unwelcoming.

The DC have about 4 sets of bedlinen each, and the spare has two sets.

I dislike using the tumble dryer so it makes sense for me to have more than one set each.

notso · 29/05/2013 10:22

Roseland I got my Christmas set from Primark.
The DC have ones from Pottery Barn online and Next.
I am a bit of a Christmas geek, I have different pictures I put on the walls in December and only paint my walls in colours which look good with red Blush

Roseland · 29/05/2013 10:28

Oh wow, you take it to a whole new level and I love it! It is too early for me to think about xmas now but I will definitely consider adding the bedding (and now pictures) to my to do list in Autumn.

notso · 29/05/2013 11:24

Yay Roseland it's only 209 days away!

Reastie · 29/05/2013 14:49

We have 2 sets, one for on the bed the other for washing/airing in the meantime. Am seriously tempted by the idea of a christmas set though :)

sparkle12mar08 · 29/05/2013 21:24

We have three duvet/pillow case sets for our bed, and about five sheets, all of which are at least 10 years old, and some are pushing 15! They're still all perfectly serviceable but we will need some new sheets in the next year or so. The children have two duvet/pillow case sets each, and about half a dozen sheets between them.

Jan49 · 29/05/2013 22:30

I only buy new if the old ones wear out or when one of us has switched to a different size of bed and we haven't had the right size. Some of my bedding came from my ex-h's parents and was theirs first and some belonged to my parents or grandparents and was theirs first, so not new when I got it. So some items are probably 40 years old. I've given lots away as we had more than we ever needed. There is an awful lot of cream or white bedding. I think it must have been illegal to have bedding in other colours until about 1985.Wink

We've got quite a lot more than 2 sets per bed.Smile I never put the same set back on straight after washing. In fact, it would be unusual for me to take sheets off the bed and put them straight in the washing machine. They usually go in the wash basket. I haven't got a tumble dryer.

WhyMeWhyNot · 30/05/2013 11:56

I buy a new set if I see something I like that's reduced in price. Then when I have a disaster, usually nail varnish related with me, I have an excuse to dispose of. My problem is where to store it all. I iron it nicely then it gets crumpled in my tiny airing cupboard. But that's a whole new thread!

fussychica · 30/05/2013 16:14

I have several sets (all self patterned white) for our bed and cream for the other bedroom. In the past I've done patterns/plain coloured but I love white/cream bedding and don't think I'll change even if fashions do. I used to keep about a dozen sets but gradually discarded them but as I don't have a tumble drier at least two sets per bed are essential.
