Manky pillows

Is there any way to get pillows clean? I wash them now and them but they sometimes end up lumpy and always end up stained eventually. Seems wasteful to keep throwing them out, but I don't really want to have grubby looking pillows. We use pillow protectors under the pillowcases but they also get stained eventually. Am I expecting too much here?

I usually buy hollow fibre pillows (no feathers etc. as we're allergic) though I'm going off these due to the going-lumpy-in-the-wash issue.

Does nobody care about my pillows?

I dont know how long pillows are supposed to last, I started buying feather ones a few years ago as I tried loads of others and they only lasted a year (and one wash). The feather ones have been washed twice and are still OK, but not as good as they were - neither option is particularly cheap or eco-friendly so hoping someone has better ideas?

My pillows also look manky even though they get washed frequently. (Although they must be about 8 years old now)I have some Argos overstuffed pillows and the fabric on the outside is just plain white cotton. The only way I know to get white cotton back to white is to bleach it. As I don't fancy bleaching my pillows I just live with manky looking pillows. You don't see them under the pillowcase anyway.

Buy latex pillows. Dunlopillo. They are amazing, no lumps, wash after wash. After washing, dry in airing cupboard. They are v expensive though

I've also failed to wash pillows, they just go lumpy in the machine, now I don't even try to wash them, I just buy cheap pillows and throw them away after a while.

It's not just the money (though obviously that is a consideration) - I hate to contribute to landfill if avoidable. Will look at Dunlopillo MrsApplepants - do they still stain though?

I work on the basis that if you have a good pillow protector that you wash regularly, you don't seem to get any stains (although DH's sweaty head leaves a general imprint ). Even if you do, they are under the pillow protector and pillow case so not in contact with you anyway so it doesn't matter. I change our pillows about every 4 or 5 years but buy fairly decent ones.

If you plump a pillow and hold it on the palm of your hand it should not flop down on either side.

I use pillow protectors with our dunlopillos but if they are marked, a quick spray with vanish before putting in the wash does the trick. They really are very good.
