New vacuum

Our vacuum has just died :( We've only had it 3 years but it is out of warranty.

So we need a new one. I'd like a decent one but we don't have a huge budget. We only use it once a week (sometimes not even that ) What would anyone recommend? Might it be worth repairing the old one or would that end up the same price as buying a new one?

Does nobody have a recommendation for a vacuum? I just can't make decisions about these things.

Depends on how it's going to be used, if you have fully carpeted house then an upright is a must, if hard floors and carpets and carrying Hoover up and down stairs then a cylinder maybe the way to go.

The biggest factors is the price.

The hoover I have linke below has been on sale for at least 20 years, gotta ask why when so many other models have come and gone - is it amazing and nobody knows lol.

I have a dyson the DC33 model, now I have never seen the hype of a dyson like some others have, I have never raved about them :(

We've got a 3 bed house with carpets in living room, stairs and bedrooms, with hard floors in the dining room, kitchen and bathroom. We only really vacuum once a week, or less if we're particularly busy.

That hoover you linked to is what my mum had when I was growing up.

Haha, see they have been around for ages. I really wonder why they have? As said so many models have come and gone and this one still here. They must just sell well.

As you have both carpet and hard flooring, it's upto you which type you get, my personal preference is upright, but everyone's different.

How much money was you looking at spending on a Vac? Did you like your previous model? Maybe see if there is an upgrade of that model?

Miele Cat and Dog. The best recommendation is if you would buy it again and I would. But I'm looking for a cheap small bagless one for my Mum. One bedroomed apartment. Any ideas?

I think we're going to go for an upright, and seeing as Argos have a sale on the Vax or Hoover vacuums we're going for one that is in the sale. I am amazed at how much vacuums cost , I'm sure the last one didn't cost anywhere near that much (which might explain why it didn't last as long as I think it should have done).

We're trying to decide between Vax Zoom or Vax Pets. We don't have pets but we do have 2 dds who seem to shed hair quite a bit.

Miele here too, small cylinder one as I only have carpet in living room downstairs so am constantly lugging it upstairs.

If you look after your miele and change both filters, it will last forever.

My neighbour has dogs, her Hoover blew up last week. She borrowed mine for a couple of days and said it was vastly superior to anything she had ever used before

I have the cat dog one too, it collects all of DD and my long hair from all over the house. I also Hoover laminate with it.

And a friend just bought a vax and threw it in the bin after a month. Clearly a rich friend!

My problem with the Miele ones is the price. I can't find one under £150 and I'm just not prepared to pay that for a vacuum. I hate vacuuming, so I don't really want to spend more than absolutely necessary.

we bought a cheap pull along from Argos - think it was 30£ and it is small and light. so far so great - had it a few months now. I figure they all have a limited life span anyway

I was considering the Argos value range poocatcher, but since the Vax ones are half price I wasn't sure if it would be better to buy a better known brand for not a massive amount more than the value ones. I'm not sure if the bigger brands last longer or are actually better. If it breaks again within a couple of years then I would be really annoyed if I've spent more money.

I recently bought a Chilli from Lakeland Hollyisalovelyname. Like you don't need anything fancy. I actually don't have much storage room and it has fantastic suction, very nippy and light. About £40. Video on youtube too.. think it is Eubank Chilli HTH

My Miele is about 20 years old and still going strong!

Bissell often do reconditioned ones, the look as new and have a one year guarantee. I got one recently for £35.00 and have had one previously (I did not break but got clogged with sooty stuff and was impossible to clean).
I have also only heard good things about Miele vac if you budget stretches to one.

What about a rechargeable dyson? I'm tempted

exactly school. its liberating not worrying if it will go wrong!

we went for a vax in the end. it was only £10 more than the value one cos it was in the sale. dd1 has tried it out already as part if her weekly chores.
