Are they any good? What are they capable of?

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for product recommendations, we’ve recently updated our guide to the best carpet cleaners with lots of options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users and editors. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

I have the combination vacuum/water cleaner. (Big orange one).

It's a great vacuum and takes before it needs emptying.

The attachments for the liquid clean are easy to assemble and really give my carpets a deep clean. I also use the smaller attachments to clean other upholstery - car seats, fabric chairs etc.

I've had mine for 8 years now, and apart from replacing the filters it's in great nick. The cable is really long as is the vacuum hose.

My neighbours found it a boon when rainstorms flooded their swimming pool and the water ran through three floors in their house. They sucked up all the water, and used it to clean their ruined rugs.

Sorry massive post - but I'm a ditherer and spend ages debating my options before I buy!!!
I have one of the ones they advertise on TV WD 90RU ??..about £150 from amazon a year ago . I got the one with the stain remover spray thing (about £20 more IIRC) but I wouldn't bother with it ...a spray bottle works just as well and if you use it you then have to empty the cleaning water tank to put 'normal' carpet cleaning solution in.
My mum has a cheaper one (spring? or something) which looks very similar but smaller and really useless...
My normal vacuum is a 12 yr old Vax (a Luna - they changed the design to be more streamline but then reverted back to the orange tub style ones) it was ok as a carpet cleaner (not as good as my new one) - my biggest problem with it was having to move everything to dry hoover and then again to wash (you have to let it dry inside before you can dry hoover again).
The one I have is a Which best buy - there is another Vax one -a Dual something more expensive and also a Which best buy - it heats the water apparently and the tanks seem to be easier to empty (one thing that is a pain about my type is the fact that all the dirty(filthy!) water goes in that clear front tank - a bit of a pain to empty, soon looks horrible and v. hard to clean out!). The reason I didn't get that one is that it is supposedly much louder than the one I got and I live in a terraced house! (And mine is pretty loud anyway).
Mine cleans the carpets well - they are not going to be immaculate if really dirty and it won't deal with really bad stains with one wash but I would say as good if not better than one I hired donkey's year ago... And easy enough to just run over the bits where everyone walks - it really doesn't take long to dry...
Also the upholstery/stair cleaning tool is only small - so it takes ages to clean stairs ...but works quite well.
There is a Bissell one that was a best buy too - but lots of which readers had problems with them starting to leak into the electrics Shock - with those you can rinse the carpet too (adds detergent as you clean) but they use a lot of detergent (not cheap) and I usually go over my carpets again with just clean water (and it still pulls out lots of dirt!) (some claim that detergent left on the carpet is sticky and attracts dirt)
The hose etc doesn't fit on the back well - a bit of a pain - and if you have somewhere else to store it I would recommend not pushing it around with it on (and they are heavy when filled with water)
Finally the first one I got had a problem with the hose attachment -a faulty o ring - leaked water everywhere and vax sent me the wrong size replacements - in the end I sent the whole machine back and got a new one and this one has been fine...
Also shop around - the Dual one I thought about was something like RRP £300+ and for sale on Vax website at that price ...but Amazon were selling it for £180...Vax were good for bulk buying the detergent though (they also do one that will do hard floors as well...v. expensive and looked similar to the Dual one - so thought probably too noisy) ...

I've posted about my Vax before, i had a vax rapide previously but upgraded to the V Dual (less than half price from amazon) which i find is a much better.

I find the v duals a brilliant clean on my cream carpets (have dog and toddler and you walk in from outside straight into lounge)

Things i like are... the huge capacity of clean and dirty water tanks, a separate small tank for the shampoo so you don't need to mix it, a wash or rinse option so you can clean with just water to refresh if you want, all pieces come apart so you can clean the machine after use, the brush bar on machine and handheld part rotate and give a great scrubbing action to get into the pile but gently enough not to damage. oh and even when full its not to heavy/awkward to push and filling/emptying is easy and leak free.

It is heavier and bulkier than some, although i'm only little and can manage it fine. The hose attachment is a bit odd but bear with it. It is louder than my rapide was but in a lower/deeper tone (the rapide was shrill and whistly which hurt my ears). I recently used a Crown shampoo (for all machines) from amazon and it was great but much cheaper than Vax own which is also good.

I'd recommend the v dual, but whatever cleaner you get please don't let folk borrow it, as other people don't tend to treat them well (my previous one stopped cleaning and started leaving black marks after a friend used it so i had to replace it).

Carpet cleaners make a huge difference though, my dirty water is often grim but recently i took the vax to a family members and cleaned thier carpet for them - 1st time in 20 years - and the dirty coming out was like tar! even discovered there was a pattern to the carpet :)

Hope that helps

SparklyStream · 15/04/2013 20:44

Tar! Oh my word! Ok, so I'm going to have a little look at some of those suggestions.

It was the visible dirt that I was interested in mainly (3 kids, a light-ish carpet), small, milk stains here and there that now look like light grey marks. It sounds as though a vax could do the trick?

Thanks for taking so much time to post all, I'm very grateful for the help and advice.

heres a link (hopefully) to the shampoo I have tried, it gave just as good results as vax shampoo

unlucky83 · 16/04/2013 13:12

sparkly - that's what so great about them ...it should clean those marks easily (things like coffee not so good) and cos you have it you can just run over the main areas (not like hiring one - so you feel like you have to under things and all the carpets in the house)
Love mine (but after reading Ember's post) - maybe I should have gone with the Dual ...

I have read a review of the Vax Dual V versus the Bissell models on here:

Hope it helps!
