How the heck do I get this pan clean?!

Need some sage Mumsnet advice here. DH kindly burnt some rice onto a pan. Boiled dry kind of thing. Confused

The bottom of the pan is black and a scourer is not doing the job. Tried some liquid soda crystals, but that hasn't worked either. It's not non-stick or anything fancy.

Any ideas?

boiling water and bleach?

EffieTheDuck · 07/04/2013 13:19

Try soaking it overnight with a good sprinkling of bio washing up powder.

EffieTheDuck · 07/04/2013 13:20

Sorry. Blush Washing powder.

Shattereddreams · 07/04/2013 13:21

I swear by fairy power spray overnight and a brillo

Ponders · 07/04/2013 13:21

you could try boiling some soapy water in it...what finish is it? if plain metal, I find the old-fashioned metal scourers work very well on stainless steel roasting tins

Fairy power spray left for 30 mins or whatever it says gets a lot of really burnt on black stuff off the enamelled grill pan I keep in the bottom of the oven (also using the metal scourers)

Chugnut · 07/04/2013 13:23

Water and bio washing powder, bring to boil on hob, black should float off.

usualsuspect · 07/04/2013 13:25

Yep,soaking in bio washing powder will do the trick.

MinnesotaNice · 07/04/2013 13:26

Make DH do it? Grin

Seriously though, I wouldn't boil bleach. Based on what I remember from chemistry class and a quick google, I'm fairly certain that will release toxic vapors that are very damaging to lungs.

I would soak in hot water with washing up liquid and then use elbow grease and steel wool. Which brings me back round to: make DH do it.

Juniperdewdropofbrandy · 07/04/2013 13:28

I have the same problem but my doing. With popcorn.

I tried the vinegar and bicarb one. Boil vinegar and water then add bicarb. Didn't work.

I'll try the washing powder one but I did soak it in that too. I'll try boiling with it.

Good luck OP.

We have stainless steel pans, and I've used mr muscle foaming oven cleaner on them when I've run out of ideas.

Mutley77 · 07/04/2013 13:34

Some of this was left by the previous owners of our last house - had never seen it before but I used to use it with great success on pans.

In my experience leave it outside the back door for about a month while fully intending to sort it out.

When you bring it back it the hard black burnt on stuff will mysteriously wash out with a quick rinse. Grin

Not seriously recommending this although it did work for me.

PigletJohn · 07/04/2013 14:08

If it is stainless, a green nylon scourer and a drop of WUL will get it clean. If it is very bad you can scratch at it with a wooden spatula or something.

Stainless is very hard wearing so will stand up to severe cleaning, but avoid scratching it with a knife or similar.

soapnuts · 07/04/2013 14:18

bicarb of soda and vinegar - leave it 20 mins and it really helps get it off

HDEE · 07/04/2013 14:50

I didn't mean boil the bleach. Just a squirt of bleach, with water from the kettle.

dothraki · 07/04/2013 14:56

salt and vinegar here - I leave it overnight then use a brillo pad

InMySpareTime · 07/04/2013 14:59

Put it through a hot dishwasher cycle (with all the oven shelves and stuff with burnt on grease) and as soon as the cycle finishes (while it's still hot) give it a wipe with a gentle scourer. It usually wipes off easily.

I recently boiled some tangerines in water in a Le Cruset pan and forgot about them. The result was a cm of burnt jam! Nothing chemical has worked. I have just boiled more and more water in it and all is fine now. Probably took about 15 attempts, I just boiled up a pan of water every time I cooked anything.

Freddiemisagreatshag · 07/04/2013 15:22

Dishwasher tab fill with water and boil.

BikeRunSki · 07/04/2013 16:11

boil some water with a dissolved bio laundry tablet in. works wonders.

knitterati · 07/04/2013 16:49

You lot rock! Thanks! DH will be busy with washing powder & the pan tonight! Smile

Dp just got ours clean tonight with a knife. It's enamel and cleaned up like new.

KLou111 · 07/04/2013 20:33

Astonish, great stuff Smile

StealthPolarBear · 07/04/2013 20:36

Yes to. Bio washing powder, squirt of washing liquid and boiling water.leave overnight

TheWildOnes · 07/04/2013 21:10

I did this last week. I put some coke in the saucepan and heated it up and the black stuff came off easy.
