What condition is your house in?

Hi.
New on here and have a question for you.
How 'visitor ready' is your house?
I thought we had a fairly tidy home but after spending the best part of a full weekend cleaning i'm not so sre!
If someone who would take notice of the cleanliness of yor came round how much time would you ideally like to get it ready?

We are always relatively tidy. I don't 'do' clutter - stuff gets tidied away as it is used.

DH is the same.

If we are having visitors I would take an extra 30 mins/hour for an extra dusting/tidy up.

GemmaTeller · 19/03/2013 14:29

Lounge is always tidy (learnt my lessons a long time ago, if the house is a tip you get visitors, if house is tidy no one calls Grin )

Pots in kitchen sink and small amount of ironing on dining room chair.

aftermay · 19/03/2013 14:29

Takes me 1-2 hours as I get sidetracked into putting a washing on, folding it away, writing a cheque as I come across the letter I'd forgotten about etc.

CarpeJugulum · 19/03/2013 14:33

It's a shit hole atm and while I used to be quite tidy, for some reason I have no motivation to sort it recently unless I know someone is coming round when I then do a panic tidy.

I need to get back to being organised...

SlatternismyMiddlename · 19/03/2013 19:37

Some bits good, some bits bad. I spend my life trying to keep on top of it.

GemmaTellar - I love your name, I presume you are a fan.

Iwantmybed · 19/03/2013 19:39

Fairly tidy. Have to keep on top of the kitchen though.

JollyYellowGiant · 19/03/2013 19:40

Bathroom needs cleaned.
Fridge needs cleaned.
Kitchen and living room are okay, but could do with the spider webs being removed and the door/tv stand being polished.
Stairs need hoovered, and upstairs too probably.

If someone was to come round tomorrow I'd have no problems with them visiting, provided I had 15 minutes to move clutter and to make sure dirty plates were in the dishwasher.

N0tinmylife · 19/03/2013 19:43

My house is fine if you don't look too closely. I find the more I clean, the more I find that needs cleaning!

noisytoys · 19/03/2013 19:46

House is pretty much always clean and tidy but I'm big on de cluttering and keep on top of it

HDEE · 19/03/2013 19:48

Always clean and tidy. I don't come downstairs in the morning without the upstairs being clean and tidy, and beds made, windows open.

Downstairs is done as soon as meals are eaten, hoovered after meals, dishwasher loaded regularly.

LeChatRouge · 19/03/2013 19:52

I am a bit like noisy and clean up every day to a certain level and then proper clean on Friday evenings. Mostly always visitor ready. Hoover, beds, laundry, wash up, tidy, dust every day. My sister thinks its an illness. She only hoovers on Tuesdays, but if she's busy on a particular Tuesday, just waits til the following Tuesday.

I have been doing some work recently that takes me into people's homes in emergency situations and I now realise that a LOT of people live with a more 'relaxed' state than I could cope with.

dashoflime · 19/03/2013 19:56

Living room is pretty good.
kitchen counters want a wipe
Bathroom is a state.
So to answer your question: visitors would be fine so long as they didn't offer to help in the kitchen or need to use the toilet

TiggerWearsATriteSmile · 19/03/2013 19:56

Visitor ready here.
The utility room is a bit untidy with boots and jackets from yesterday as we were all at the beach but they just need to be put out to the garage.

wendybird77 · 19/03/2013 20:48

I think you are going to get a biased answer on the good housekeeping page. I suspect that there are more people who's houses are a wreck, but they are over on beauty & style, AIBU or other, more fun, pages. My house is generally pretty visitor ready, but I certainly don't hoover or dust every day. I battle clutter like it's my job and try to maintain good habits like putting things away, making beds and keeping on top of laundry. At the end of the day, we live here - so the floors aren't always clean and there are often muddy boots by the door. And cat paw prints in the sink. Grin

JollyYellowGiant · 19/03/2013 21:05

It all depends on your standards. My house is possibly far less clean than some of yours, yet I assume visitors won't notice the state of my skirting boards or whether the door handles have been polished so would be happy to be visited.

CookieB · 19/03/2013 23:45

I don't know really, my visitors just appear. As I get older I gradually add more on to my daily routine due this utterly shameful and rude behaviour. Ground floor gets vacuumed almost everyday. Middle floor = 3 times a week. Dirty dishes still accumulate in the sink despite having dishwasher so this is always sorted before I can sleep. Work tops cleaned straight after dinner, hob too. Bathroom quick cleaned every morning due to toothpasty spit marks on sink and utterly rubbish aiming on the loo from dp and ds. Our bedroom is in the loft so beds get made on the way down for brekkie. I also have black gloss telly unit that needs dusted every bloody 30 minsConfused. I only do skirtings, fridge cleaning etc once a month. Pretty presentable (imo) but for the love of god don't go in my bedroom. Dumping ground of satans shit.

NotAnotherPackedLunch · 19/03/2013 23:56

Downstairs - even on a bad day not more than 30 mins to being visitor ready .
Upstairs - total shit hole. It takes hours to excavate the spare room for guests. The rest of the house is kept fairly clear by chucking everything into the guest room and slamming the door.

fussychica · 20/03/2013 15:45

Anyone turning up at the mo couldn't come in - we've got hall and bathroom flooring being laid - it's a madhouse.

Once I've finished cleaning up the mess/dust tomorrow it will be lovely and straight until DS arrives home from Uni for the easter hols on Friday night and it will be a tip again.

GemmaTeller · 20/03/2013 15:55

slattern we've only just discovered it and are on season 3, we're hooked (I asked DH would he 'do' Gemma and he said 'hell yeah' )

FlatCapAndAWhippet · 21/03/2013 07:28

Ours is always neat and tidy, things put away and generally clean. Spring cleaned last weekend so super clean at the moment. I tend to clean whilst I'm doing things during the day and then for a couplof hours on a Saturday morning.

There is only dd and I though, so it makes keeping things in order easier. Plus I am a bit obsessive about my house being clean and tidy. Blush

reastie · 21/03/2013 10:59

Sitting room 95% of the time is tidy and ready should we have unexpected visitors we never do though [unpopular] . Rest of the house it depends how much DD lets me do!
