I mainly was at 30 as worried about clothes fading but was wondering if is better to wash at 40?

Mostly 40, sometimes a 60 for towels.

I tried washing at 30, but combined with my wafty Ecover detergent, things didn't seem to come out that fresh (particularly sweaty armpits, yuk)

I think even non bio will fade clothes as it'll have a bleach based brightener. I use a colour powder on anything darker than pastel.

I do everything at 40 but am now wondering if it should be 30. I never do a separate towel wash but might start so the machine gets a hot wash. I don't worry about germs on clothes as they don't last long without food and moisture.

30 mostly.
60 for towels and bedding.

Flibbertyjibbet · 12/03/2013 16:07

30 for stuff that just needs freshening, 40 for most other stuff, 60 for bedding, occasional 90 for whites.

Non-bios usually contain bleach, thsi is what fades things. I use colour tabs (the ones from lidl are fab) for anything not white, and whites tabs (which contain bleach) for whites. Temperature doesn't fade things.

Doing it this way, our clothes never fade. School uniform tops are the same colour on ds2 now as when we bought them for ds1 in reception 3 years ago, despite washing twice a week for all that time.

I tried Lidl's own brand but don't seem to wash well. Was a shame as i heard so many good things about them. As I have sensitive skin the colour powders seem to irritate me.

40 for most stuff (inc towels and bedding), 30 for delicates.

catlady1 · 13/03/2013 16:10

40 for colours

60 for dirty stuff and DPs smelly socks and pants

90 for towels and to clean the machine out

peppertree · 13/03/2013 16:53

mainly 60
40woolwash for delicates
now and again 95 for bedding and towels

Wow... Can't believe how hot some people wash at. Some labels on clothes say wash at only 30 and 40? Would you risk washing them hotter than that?

I see very few items of clothing that say 30 on the label, most say 40. I use 40 for the vast majority of clothes.

OhMyNoReally · 13/03/2013 21:05

30 mostly I use daz
40 for dirtier clothes with napisan for stains
60 for towels and bedding

I only notice bobbling but I think my spin is too powerful. I've never had fading.

CommanderShepard · 17/03/2013 11:09

30 for normal stuff, 40 for nappies, 60 for towels and bedding and and occasional empty wash at 90 to clean the machine.

MrsPennyapple · 17/03/2013 11:15

Mostly 40. DP's sweaty work clothes at 60. Towels go in with whatever colour wash they are, I don't do a separate batch for towels as I heard that it can be bad for the machine. Don't know how true it is, something to do with the weight when they have absorbed lots of water can cause the load to become unbalanced.

It annoys me that labels on garments almost always say 40, when quite often they'll stand up to 60 (which I do if they are especially dirty, or stained). My machine has a "babycare" cycle which is 95 degrees, but I've NEVER seen a laundry label say it's ok to wash that hot - I've used it a couple of times with no ill effects.

ZipItShrimpy · 17/03/2013 11:20

40 for darks, 50 for whites, towels and bedding.

MrsJohnDeere · 17/03/2013 11:28

40 for most things
30 for jumpers, delicate stuff
60 for bedding, towels, e cloths

noisytoys · 17/03/2013 19:58

Cold wash. The water heater upper bit on the machine is broken and I can't afford a new one so washed on cold for over a year now
