Can anyone tell me about blankets, please? Confused!

Can you tell me what you put on top of your mattress, please? I've just bought new spare beds, and I'm looking to buy some bedding for them. Now, on the other beds in the house I've got blankets between the mattress and the fitted sheet - just basic blue blankets (wool?) that I was given by my mother, and are as old as the hills. I use them to protect the mattress from minor spills and make it slightly comfier to lie on. I've just tried to buy some more, and I've got myself all confused, as nobody seems to sell them. I can find heated blankets, fleece throws, 'mattress toppers' that look like duvets, or super-expensive wool blankets from John Lewis that start at £75 each. Am I missing something? Does nobody use what I'd call basic blankets any more Confused? Or am I just kidding myself about how much they cost? Help!

They are not cheap.

Try the Atlantic blanket company. If you are not too fussed over style you can give them an idea of preferred colours and they do a special price for a surprise!

LapinDeBois · 28/02/2013 13:34

Blimey, I'm beginning to realise my mum was quite generous in giving me a load of blankets Shock. Like the sound of a 'surprise', though. They're out of stock at the moment, so I might wait around and see if they come back. Or could try secondhand on ebay I guess.

You just need a mattress topper surely? Like a modern equivalent of a blanket

LapinDeBois · 28/02/2013 13:44

Ok, maybe the problem was that I'd never heard of a mattress topper! Even those seem quite fancy, though - they're all memory foam and goose down and stuff. Hmm, will have to look into this further! Oh, just found these at White Company for £30 each - do you reckon they'd do the job? www.thewhitecompany.com/bedroom/toppers-and-protectors/luxury-quilted-mattress-protectors/

I've got another duvet on top of mine, but my mattress is a bit springy and crap

Matress toppers are generally thick, designed to improve the comfort, and hence expensive. You just need something to protect the mattress and add in that extra layer of air don't you? Try a protector instead.

Speckledy · 28/02/2013 13:53

I think what you're looking for is usually called a mattress protector not a mattress topper, which are normally thicker

Thanks everyone. The hazy world of bedding is beginning to come into focus. I fancy natural fibre so I think I'll go for one of the slightly more expensive mattress protectors, but I'm still looking at £30 rather than £100 for a wool blanket, so thanks!

dunhelm mill do a lovely one (teddy bear topper i think it's called) can buy online

sportyme · 03/03/2013 09:16

Yes, I agree with the above. You need a mattress protector, the quilted ones are really comfy. Alternatively, you can Sie a underblanket. Both available [[www.Homespacedirect.com
Here ]]but the blanket is synthetic.

QOD · 03/03/2013 09:18

I use thinly quilted mattress protector on our spare bed, must have been dirt cheap cos I am!

OutsideOverThere · 03/03/2013 09:19

I think there's nothing like sleeping on a proper wool blanket. Mattress toppers aren't the same.

My mum gave me a load of old wool blankets too. Some a bit thin now but they are great. I think they were cheaper in the old days iyswim. People didn't have duvets so they were universally used.

To my shame I used a large pink one on the rabbit hutch to protect them during the winter one year and it's never recovered from being weed on through the wire Blush Poor blanket.

Sunnyshores · 03/03/2013 16:33

If your mattress is comfortable and in good condition, then you shouldnt need a mattress topper.
For cleanliness and extra comfort you could have a mattress protector. The White Company ones are great, about £30. Or, you could have a wool blanket, from £70+ John Lewis or a cellular cotton blanket. For my children I have a fake sheepskin type protector.

PigletJohn · 03/03/2013 17:45

you can also use a white acrylic blanket, which is cheaper than wool. A white blanket or mattress cover also makes white sheets on top look brighter.

Most mattress covers have a polypropylene skirt or backing, which can melt in a tumble drier.

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/03/2013 19:41

Not the white company, there not called shite company in this house for nothing in this house.

Get thee to tk Maxx for a nice mattress protector.

If you want feather, make sure it's ethically plucked ie not plucked from live birds.

Sunnyshores · 04/03/2013 19:45

interesting, whats the problem with the White Company (other than cost)?

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/03/2013 20:17

Poor quality.

Poor customer service.

It's all kippers and curtains.
