The front of your house...

Would anyone like to tell me what decorative things ie; hanging baskets, they have outside their home?

I'm looking for ideas as the outside of my house is looking a little neglected and bare.

We have a lovely tree in a pot next to our front door which was (years ago) a wedding present. We then have a selection of pots with a mixture of mature herbs (large) which smell nice & bulbs which flower at different seasons. I have a small vertical trellis with an evergreen clematis climbing up it and we also have a bench which looks over our postage stamp sized lawn.

Sounds lovely wonky. We have a small front garden with quite a bit of overgrown 'all kinds of' plants that probably need dealing with before I start anywhere, really!

I have a willow wreath on the front all year around that I change a bit according to the season. Obv at Christmas I have holly and stuff on it, Valentine's I cut out paper hearts and stick them on temporarily. Easter I weave yellow checked ribbon around it and add MacMillan mini daffodils. Summer I use silk rose petals, autumn I put ears of corn, Halloween gothic stuff, and then we are back to Christmas again. It's a bit twee but I get a lot of fun out of redecorating it.

I also have a metal bench, flanked with neat and tidy log piles. There are also two terracotta pots with skimmia at the moment, and a semi-circular bed with a box border filled with lavender, and a little water feature in the middle. Should really be twee but it works, like a mini knot garden.

Scaffolding Grin

I plan to replace it with a grid of paving stones, with lavender and thyme as ground cover.

No window boxes yet.

We have a falling down Amdega conservatory , that we tried to get repaired last summer if it ever stopped raining this is white and wooden .
We have 2 pretty sofas in there , a table for the post and a little chair . There is an old plant stand that I have some pink cyclamen in ( had poinsettias at Christmas )
There is a patio to the front door , which have a few pots with mini iris , hellebore and other spring bulbs coming through .
A bit shabby , but chic hopefully !

I don't have a garden as it has been block paved to make it a drive - I wish I had some grass & flower beds. Instead, I have 2 hanging baskets, 1 each side of the bay window. I have a <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?start=107&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&biw=1260&bih=574&tbm=isch&tbnid=HYfsufnu9vX_JM:&imgrefurl=www.riverford.co.uk/wash/shop/gifts_treats/eco_cool_safe_large/&docid=b4XQKTJiaxLn3M&imgurl=www.riverford.co.uk/graphics_cache/86/00/4826-ecocoolsafelarge-3-262.jpg&w=262&h=262&ei=KncqUeH0GsbN0QWGxoGICA&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=215&vpy=254&dur=97&hovh=209&hovw=209&tx=92&ty=149&sig=117051064959458023724&page=5&tbnh=147&tbnw=149&ndsp=31&ved=1t:429,i:100" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">little wooden cupboard like this by the front door with pretty plants & several smaller pots containing seasonal flowers & bulbs as well as some bigger shrubs & foliage. I like the front of the house to look pretty.

Boffin - I love the sound of your wreath. I have one in December but have wanted to do a seasonal one all year round. I lived in America for years where they all have seasonal decorations on the porch. I am now going to order a wreath so I can start making a spring one. Smile

BoffinMum · 24/02/2013 20:42

When it snowed I wrapped white ribbon around it and put a white ceramic owl left over from Christmas in the middle.

It has been fun doing it. I think I got the idea from a house near the Botanic Gardens that always has seasonal decorations in its windows.

NotGoodNotBad · 24/02/2013 20:45

I presume you're talking about the front?

We have an archway around the front door made of a pyracantha either side, which meet in the middle, pain to prune though!

Three front steps each have a pot at each end, with flowers or small shrubs if and when they survive!

Small front garden with low-maintenance shade-loving plants and stone cat statue. Hedge around it, about 5-6 ft, with hedge archway again over gate. Once I've come in through the hedge it feels like an urban sanctuary though when it needs pruning I feel like the prince coming to rescue Sleeping Beauty.

Window boxes.

bay tree cut into a lollypop

stepover box hedge (work in progress)

big pots by the season

Srewtape · 24/02/2013 23:58

Grockle - that is lovely, I too have a bay cut into a lollypop, and some lavendar and rosemary. The rosemary keeps getting damaged by a neighbours child playing football, but Grockles cupboard has inspired me, I might put it in something like that - with some marigolds. Also loving Boffins wreath idea.

OhTheConfusion · 25/02/2013 13:38

We have a driveway to the left then a small border filled with lavender and miniature roses separating it from the path.
There is a step up to the front door and two metal and glass lanterns sit on it with candles (that are only ever lit at Christmas or when we have guests over at night Blush). A mixture of potted full size and miniature roses are under the front windows then just bog standard grass!

We bought a new build so the front lawn was laid... still have the tip of a back garden to tackle this spring!

WorriedMary · 25/02/2013 16:43

We have a driveway on the right, with a lawn in front of the bay window and porch.

In front of the bay we have a large Urn with cordyline in it, and Lavender planted in 3 aluminium containers two tall and one wide. Plus various other planters.

I love the idea of the wreath and I love the cupboard linked to above.
