hoover exploded a few days ago been on the blink for ages so I stopped using it but the nanny offered and what could I say

it was about £50, and with a reasonable motor and no bag.

what hoover do I need now? is it still about pull along or is there the perfect upright about? space saving and lightweight would both be good

thanks kind experts!

If you have mostly flat floors with carpets, an upright will be better as it beats out the dust, grit, fleas and moths.

If you have lots of stairs and laminate or other hard floors, a cylinder will suit you.

really good uprights tend to cost more than really good cylinders as there is more to them. They are also heavier to carry upstairs.

£50 is not much Sad sorry

The cheapest "Which" best buy is about £145. Miele tops the best-buy lists, with Bosch just behind. There are a couple of high-scorers that didn't quite make the Best Buys table at just under £100

The new white dust bags are extremely good at keeping their suction and trapping very fine particles, better than the old brown paper bags.

p.s.

I just looked at the test results, prices between £40 and £60, and the highest Which scores among them were all small cylinders

Hoover Capture TCP2011 £60

Electrolux ErgoEasy ZTF7620 £60

Vax C89-P6-B Power 6 £60

The best uprights are Sebo. They're pretty dear.

If you have lots of laminate, I recommend a Henry. Total workhorse, good tools. It's OK on carpets if you have that one brush that has a rotating bar in it. But, it's not a beater bar: it's driven by air. I use it because it's a good all-rounder and great value for money. But, if I had room in my car, I'd save my pennies for a Sebo upright. Those things beat the hell out of carpets.

I have a Vax bagless cylinder and I utterly loathe it. Blocks and loses suction if so much as a lentil goes up. I am lucky enough not to have to use it much but it's particularly useless if anyone in your household has long hair. And we are totally carpetless...Can't wait for it to properly die so I can get a bagged Miele cylinder, which I didn't realise was so vastly superior until I helped a friend with a house move recently and had a go on hers...! You could hoover up half a brick and it would just shrug it off. Miele all the way, it will last you 20 years.

Oh thanks for the ideas! I know £50 isn't much but we don't have much more and I've never known a Hoover last more than a few years...

Our floors are mostly hard wearing carpet with laminate in the bathroom and tiles in the kitchen. 2 flights of stairs if you include the loft but don't as we've only hoovered up there twice
And I don't do heavy.

Does my cheapness and weakness mean that an upright is out?

I don't think you will get an upright worth having for that.
