hairy pet owners that have non hairy homes?

i hoover at least once everyday. i have to. i have a golden retriever and 2 cats although tbf the cats are out most of the day and when they are in they are usually in one spot on my bed and dont put much hair about the place. the dog is in the house and there is hair on everything. i'm so fed up of putting on freshly washed clothes and having to constantly pick hairs off them. even after getting out of the car there will be more hairs on me. we have hard floors downstairs and dog is only allowed downstairs. i have a henry hound with a numatic attatchment which is great for the carpet on the stairs and landing. i have removed all the cushions and throws from my living room sofas now as the hair just clings to them and it was so much extra work. just 2 plain (boring now) leather sofas. i have removed the rug aswell. the only soft furnishings in my living room now are the curtains. the hair is everywhere, down the back of the radiator, under the sofas in the draught excluder brushes attatched to the bottom of the doors. even the second after i've hoovered i will still see hairs floating about and landing back down on the floor. i need to sort this without getting rid of the dog. (that's non-negotiable)

how do you keep your houses hair free?

I feel your pain. I groom very regularly with the fulminator plus a top coat brush and lint roll my cat. Have tried various foods etc with limited success. watching with interest

I don't have a hairy dog but was thinking maybe grooming the dog more may be your answer. You can get a grooming attachment for a vacum cleaner, although many animals are not keen on it.

Booyhoo · 19/02/2013 13:56

yes TBH i dont groom him enough. i groom him weekly with the deep tooth comb ( another GR owner recommended it) out in the garden but i think i'm going to have to do it every morning before our walk. i'm going to google the hoover attatchment. he isn't too fussed by the hoover/hairdryer but i'm sure i could train him to like it.

You won't have a hair free house until the dog no longer lives there. I tried everything, but in the end just ended up having all soft furnishings the same colour as the dog and stopped wearing black and certain types of knitwear. Luckily the dog was lovely. I won't have another dog that sheds though.

Maybe it would be worth taking him for a professional groom every so often. And you just keep up inbetween.

Booyhoo · 19/02/2013 14:12

yep think i will start doing that. it really is getting to me now.

Get the dog professionally groomed, that helps. I actually get my GR clipped off for the summer which I know isn't the done thing with GRs but honestly he's so much happier without all that fur in the heat and it does mean less hair in the house. I think you probably have to get a bit less fussy too. There are a few hairs floating around my house but they don't kill me!

erowid · 19/02/2013 14:23

My friend had the same problem with her golden retriever and used this to groom the dog. She swears by it and says it takes half the time to clean the house now.

Sallystyle · 19/02/2013 14:28

My Jack Russel gets thick white hairs everywhere.

Apart from grooming her and hoovering we just have to put up with the horrid things.

Lafaminute · 19/02/2013 14:32

I have a golden retriever though it's a wonder there's a hair left on her after all I hoover up every morning. Anyway she spent three months with my parents at one stage and it was probably a few days before she came home that I stopped being accosted by mini retrievers (big balls of dog hair) every time someone moved in the house!! The breeders we brought her from recommended that she live outdoors in a garage or something (as her parents did) but she moved onto the middle foot of our bed two days after we got her so that was never really an option.

Lafaminute · 19/02/2013 14:33

PS also got my girl completely clipped and it made no difference to the amount of fur balls......but did make her a lot happier.

No solutions I'm afraid, but just wanted to say your dog looks gorgeous in your pics Grin

I owned a GR and fought a constant battle with the hair!

Booyhoo · 19/02/2013 17:13

oops! i forgot i had those pics up. i only had them up to show off my rug for another thread Grin

i think you are all right, there is just always going to be hair on my dinner

but i will get him groomed professionally and start doing it myself each morning. i really want to get my rug and cushions back though. thsi room echoes without them. it's not cosy at all.

We purposely bought a dog that doesn't shed or drool: the Murray River curly-coated retriever.

There are about 8 of these in the UK, which is not useful, I realise.
