What creature is living in my loft?

For weeks now i have heard noises from our roof space. It is kind of scurrying but more regular. Like a kind of bat-bat-batnoise, fast but rhythmic.

Is it just a bird?

We once had a crazy squirrel scale our house and cling upside down to the outside wall for hours on end, could it be a squirrel nest?

The sound only happens every so often and when we go in the loft to have a look, there is nothing to see , but insulation could be hiding a multitude of monsters....

Blueish eg would be a robin - but am not sure they'd come into a loft.

Starlings also lay bluey eggs, but not as tiny as you describe. Pigeon eggs are usually white, but can vary, but bigger. Sparrow eggs can be blue but very flecked.

Google the pics, and see if you can decide which!

NB European robin eggs (so the ones we get in the UK) are white or very pale blue with brwny red bits. The American Robin's egg is Tiffany blue.

I think that blackbirds also have blue eggs?

Thanks everyone. So on the assumption/hope that it is a bird, quite possibly a starling going by the egg, is there any worry about them being in my roof?

Can they cause damage and do i need to try and deter them or block up gaps when they have finished using their nest to stop them returning next year?

And when i say i, i mean i'll have to get someone in to block up holes as i am useless on a ladder and don't own one. Smile

Could well be starlings, we had them living in the eaves but they sounded as if they were in the roof. They woke us up in the mornings rustling and clonking. They have blue eggs.

IsItAMonster · 03/03/2013 16:47

Thanks fallen, did they cause any damage or did you just leave them to get on with it? Also, do they leave their nest after they've raised their chicks?
