My engaement ring is dirty and it's lost it's shine and seems to have dirt even under the ring between the stone and the setting. Can I clean it at home? It's 1 c diamond and the ring is gold. My dm says put it in washing up liquid but I am very nervous of damaging it. I don't like to leave it at jewellers ( paranoid)

Thanks!

i have been told washing up liquid too and scrub gently with a tooth brush. it worked lovely on mine.

a friend who is a jeweller told me toothpaste for silver and the results are amazing, ill ask him if its the same on gold.

fwiw i was anxious about leaving my ring at a jewellery but making pizza dough lost me one of the diamonds so i sent it for repair as dp had insured it and they cleaned it while it was in and it looks amazing it was so dull and tarnished before im so pleased with the results Smile

Toothpaste is abrasive.

Gold and diamonds both attract grease. from the skins natural oils, which retains dirt and skin particles.

WUL is fine.

You will find that people who regularly wash up by hand have clean bright rings.

Opals need more care.

Try not to use a brush on stone set jewelry as it can dislodge the stones or bend claws.

Thank you- I'm going to give it a go today. I am going to buy some fairy liquid specially:) usually I have the cheapest which might harbour chemicals not tested for years like fairy on millions of housewives:)

Every now and then Aldi do ultrasonic cleaner things for about £15. They are like a little vibrating pot of water and ace for cleaning jewellery etc. I do my glasses in mine too, it is weirdly fascinating to watch the amount of gunk that comes out of the joints!

Primadonnagirl · 18/02/2013 09:07

Easy... Put it on one of the spikes in the dishwasher....the steam gets every bit off gunk out and it will be so sparkly, no scratching etc

justaweeone · 18/02/2013 09:15

Soak it in some vodka and it will come up a treat

I use a toothbrush and toothpaste on my rings. Paste may be abrasive but it's not going to scratch a diamond, which is much harder than tooth enamel!

I was once at the jeweller it was bought from, and he offered to clean it. I said I used a toothbrush and he said he did too! Though sometimes he will use his polisher as well which gets the gold looking new.

(I do always put the sink plug in though, just in case!)

If you have platinum settings rather than white gold, they do go duller over the years. This is because it's originally thinly plated with another metal and this gradually wears off. Rhodium I think.

I always leave mine in bio washing liquid overnight then using a paint brush give a good clean after, its amazing how much dirt comes out.

agedknees · 18/02/2013 13:38

I put mine in steradent and boiling water. Leave for a few hours and you have lovely sparkling jewellery. Do not use on pearls though.

My mother used to work at one of the poshest jewellers on Bond Street. Ladies used to come in and have their jewellery 'professionally cleaned'.

That meant my mum in the basement office with a toothbrush and washing up liquid!

Isandri · 20/02/2013 13:08

My jeweller told to get a smallbowl of warm water and washing up liquid and a baby toothbrush and to clean my ring once a month. He said not to bother with an ultrasonic cleaner. My ring is white gold with a diamond.
