Getting rid of vomit smells in carpet

DS has vomited all over hallway carpet and stairs. I've spent hour washing it all out with various household cleaning fluids and a scrubbing sponge and drenched the area in water. I did open the windows but it's freezing outside today and we've still got the central heating on. So I can't easily 'air' the hallway.

Still stinks of vomit and I have business clients coming to various meetings (and walking through the area to my office) next week! Help!

How do I eradicate the smell asap?

Liberally sprinkle with bicarbonate of soda and brush into carpet. Leave for as long as possible then Hoover!

Agree with myflabber - although when she says "liberally sprinkle", she does mean "coat" :)

Someone told me to liberally douse it with vinegar. But I don't know if that gets rid of the smell or whether the vinegar smell overpowers the vomit smell!

Bicarb as suggested above. Leave it a good while before hoovering up.

Thanks everyone. Can't gte out to buy bicarb. as need to stay with DCs and one of course is sick. So will have to wait till he's recovered (no other adults here and no one available to help).

Can I just ask if bicarb is poisonous to cats? We have two mogs who dig at the carpet and will lick/eat anything at all! Worried bicarb might poison them but already used loads of various cleaning products on carpet and am trying to keep cats away.

No, although if you're leaving a heap of it on the carpet I'd keep pets out of it until you've hoovered it up.

Thumbwitch · 20/01/2013 03:07

Not poisonous to them no, but it would be a bad idea to let them in it!

Talking of cats, will bicarbonate work on cats mess... Cat had accident on carpet twice in past week and its left a stain..

Bicarb is safe for animals...i really rub it in almost like a thick paste and leave hoover and do it again.. Its magical stuff great for cleaning silver as well!!!!
