What essentials are in your house cleaning cupboard?

I have a random collection of bottles and sprays lurking under the kitchen sink. In an effort to bring order to the chaos of my house, I have bought a caddy thing that I can just whack it all into and carry around the house when the cleaning mood strikes me, which isn't often, but still.

Bemused by the array of wipes, kitchen sprays, bathroom sprays, floor cleaner, polish, cloths etc etc I was wondering what little pearls of wisdom others might share with me.

My only must-have is a Magic Eraser for getting marks off everything - I brought some back from the US but haven't seen them here.

I have a plastic trug with Flash lemon liquid for hot washing floors and surfaces, Lemon pledge for wood and mirrors, a tub of Astonish oven cleaner (like solid Jiff) which is great for stubborn marks on any hard surface, and that's it! I do keep brass and silver polish under the sink, an M&S bathroom spray and toilet duck in the loo though. Fed up with the clutter and waste of disposable cloths and sponges I now use M&S face cloths (dark red for the kitchen, duck egg for the bathroom) I keep one by the sink, and the rest are rolled up neatly in a pot underneath. They're used once and then popped washed in the machine.

Aldi do them.

Soda crystals are fab

White vinegar mixed with water in a plant spray thingy. I use it on windows, mirrors and the tiles and taps in the bathroom, and the kitchen sink. If there is any stubborn limescale I soak kitchen roll in white vinegar and wrap it round the taps.

I like Hob Brite to clean the hob.

Bar Keepers friend to get stubborn marks off work tops.

Dove soap to clean the leather sofa.

clippety like the idea of the face cloths. No-one uses them in our house so I might as well put them to good use. Do feel endless wipes are not v ecofriendly.

lovesbeing thanks for the Aldi tip - had resisted the lure of the much-raved about Aldi as not v close to me, but now that I know I can get Magic Erasers there I feel it is worth the pilgrimage!

lands - how do you stop the house smelling of vinegar? Is it a very weak solution?

Thanks all Smile

It does smell a bit of vinegar after but I don't mind it TBH. Most cleaning products smell too strong for me and give me migraines but the vinegar doesn't. I have the windows open so it goes quite quickly.

Bleach
Wood cleaner
All round cleaner like Flash
Anti bacterial spray
Anti bacterial liquid (for floors as we have a dog)
Febreze

My dh likes star drops to clean the car inside and out.

noisytoys · 07/01/2013 11:22

A spray bottle of white vinegar. A spray bottle of bleach water mix, washing up liquid. That is all and my house is squeaky clean Smile

Soapandglory please give cleaning leather sofa with Dove instructions, never heard of that one before mmmm love Dove

specialsubject · 07/01/2013 11:52

jif, soda crystals, white vinegar, disinfectant spray, glass spray wood polish, j-cloths, pan scrubbers, duster, microfibre cloths.

that's it. No bleach due to septic tank, this lot does everything. All from B and M or similar. No wipes (eco-disaster).

landofsoapandglory · 07/01/2013 13:55

Bootsy you need 2 cloths, I use face cloths, one to put it one and one to take it off.

Dampen one cloth, rub the soap on the cloth and rub it on to the sofa. Then use the other cloth, dampened in clean warm water, I have 2 washing up bowls on the go, to rub off the soap you have just put on, and repeat.

I do it in small sections. You'll be surprised at the dirt that comes off!

Just like Karate Kid! "Wipe on wipe off"
Thanks for the tip off, I shall be purchasing a bar of Dove and having a go this week. That's soooooooo clever, the moisturiser in the Dove feeds the leather and the soap cleans the muck mmmmmm and I absolutely love the lovely clean fresh smell of Dove.
*disclaimer I don't work for Dove

Generally these are things I use daily/weekly: Glass cleaner for kitchen table and bathroom mirror; Granite cleaner for kitchen granite; Soft scrub with bleach for kitchen sink; Package of baby wipes for quick cleaning a small mess; bathroom foaming cleaner for tub, shower, sink, toilet tank, in back of toilet seat; Floor cleaning wipes (the wet kind) for Swiffering the kitchen and bathroom floor (I do this by hand though on my hands and knees); lots of white inexpensive washcloths for cleaning with bleach and then wiping off; and several pairs of good rubber gloves. I can never have enough, they wear out so quickly.

Drywhiteplease · 08/01/2013 21:01

E cloths from Lakeland .....in fact any cloth from Lakeland.
I bought a dusting MIT from Morrissons as a joke....but you know what it's fab!!!

almondfinger · 08/01/2013 21:13

If I could only have one product in the world for cleaning it woud be Cif (It wll always be called Jif in this house)I use it to clean bathroom, kitchen, sinks, doors. It's the best ever.
Vinegar and water for windows
Fairy liquid in water for must easy cleaning jobs.
And a tip from Mumsnet when I had to clean the house when moving recently. OvenPride to clean an oven. Bin Mr Muscle, this stuff is magic. Your oven with sparkle for just 3.99 and not even that much elbow grease has to be applied. Yes it's toxic but wow, what a find.

Please dont use wipes, they are so eco unfriendly. Especially if you flush them. There was a discussion on the radio bere christmas about the blockages they are causing. There have been tons of the things pulled out of drains - and that was a single blockage!!!

Old facecloths, cotton boxers, childrens vests - fabulous dusters an cloths.
