Is it worth getting?!

Depends on you really. I love it but you might not!

Piffpaffpoff · 03/01/2013 22:36

Hmm, I got it on subscription last year and got really fed up with it. I'm 41 and I felt like it I was only reading about half of it - mostly the cooking stuff. The rest seemed aimed at an older audience, the folk on the cover were Lulu, Julie Walters, Dawn French, Helen Mirren, the youngest I saw was Kirstie Allsopp. And it seemed to always be full of 'inspirational' stories of yummy mummies who ran multi-million pound cupcake companies from their kitchen tables while their kids were at school (I exaggerate slightly but you get the picture...). So I've unsubscribed and might try it again in 10 years or so.

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 03/01/2013 22:39

This is better and free!

No.

I am ten years older (at least) than Piffpaff Grin but it isn't really for me either, I used to read it over twenty years ago and I just don't feel it has changed at all, every year the same old articles are churned out.

wonderstuff · 03/01/2013 22:42

I like it - I'm 31 and do agree that it is aimed at women older than me. I love all the recipes and the review guides - I'm sure it used to be younger - have more stuff for younger mums. Anyway I got a years subscription with my Tesco points, so basically free. I was buying it about every other month before I subscribed. Loved the Christmas issues.

UsedToBeAPixie · 03/01/2013 22:47

If nothing else, get the Christmas issue - it starts off the festive season for me!
I'm also 31 and my husband keeps me subscribed, bless him. It can be hit and miss, sometimes I do get a tad fed up of the inspirational yummy mummies as well - but I haven't found anything else that lasts me as long and I would definitely recommend giving it a try :)

timidviper · 03/01/2013 22:47

I am 10 years older than Piffpaff too. I started getting it occasionally in my 30s and enjoyed it but I had it on subscription last year and also got bored. The celebrities are old, I don't think I learned anything new from it over the entire year and the whole tone is smug. I will revert to just buying whichever mag takes my fancy now and again.

MIL, who is 80, asked for a subscription to it for Xmas though!

Piffpaffpoff · 03/01/2013 22:47

I feel like I'm in a magazine void now - I feel too old for Marie Claire and the like, but far too young for GH. Can't stand Hello/ok/closer but do retain a slight soft spot for Heat on occasion. The only one I really like is the super-trashy National Enquirer! Xmas Blush. Any recommendations on others to try?

XBenedict · 03/01/2013 22:49

It' ok but I prefer Essentials, recipes are fab!

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 03/01/2013 22:50

I've just dropped Red because it had no relevance to my life. Easy Living has become an embarrassing soft porn fest. I'm tempted by Prima or Essentials but are they frumpy old lady mags? I'm 41 too

HazeltheMcWitch · 03/01/2013 22:51

piffy - have you tried RED ? That's my fave of the 'glossies' now.
Instead, I ahve mostly transferred my affections to interiors magazines.

HazeltheMcWitch · 03/01/2013 22:51

haha to the X-post.

Psychologies could also be worth a gander, although I find it too worthy.

timidviper · 03/01/2013 23:28

Nah! I tried Psychologies for a year but it was very repetitive, OK for the odd issue but not regularly.

I tried Spirit and Destiny too but that was the same, just retrod the same ground over and over.

thekitchenfairy · 04/01/2013 10:33

Easy living but agree with Iama the sex/advice/porn content has gone v OTT the last couple of issues

I swap with woman and home with a friend, it's ok, but proffered when she was a red subscriber!

AgentProvocateur · 04/01/2013 10:40

I used to get Goid Housekeeping, but it felt like it was sponsored by Breast Cancer UK. Every edition was full of inspirational survivors' stories, or ways to reduce your risk, or diets that could help.... Eventually cancelled that, and also Easy Living when it changed format. I don't know what to get any more either.

happystory · 04/01/2013 10:45

I still miss SHE magazine Sad

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 04/01/2013 11:05

Woman and Home was like that too Agent- I had a relative with terminal cancer and I found myself ground down by their obsession with breast cancer.

AgentProvocateur · 04/01/2013 11:21

Iammummy, you're right - it was/is an obsession with women's magazines.

I miss She and I miss Eve.

twinklesparkles · 04/01/2013 12:28

Hmmm I like it but its 90% adverts .. So must admit I don't buy it anymore :(

If I see old copies in charity shops ect I tend to pick them up for just a few pennies :)

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/01/2013 12:51

I bought a housework book and don't buy branded cleaning stuff so really I didn't learn anything from it.

Ishtar2410 · 04/01/2013 12:58

I occasionally buy Good Housekeeping to see if it's got any better, but then get disappointed. The recipes are good, but the articles aren't really something that I find interesting.

On the other hand I've been getting Prima for years and still enjoy reading it (for info, I'm 42). Easy Living is another, but I agree with the posters above that it's got a bit OTT with the sex/porn.

EmpressMaud · 04/01/2013 18:20

It seemed to be full of advertisements and beauty/health articles, last time I bought it.

I miss She magazine too, with those nice cut out recipe cards Blush

MushroomSoup · 04/01/2013 22:46

Gosh, just come back to this and am amazed by how much you're reading!!
I'm tempted to try it as a one off - and maybe Red, too.....and maybe Prima...
