(With many thanks to Jdub for title inspiration!!)

If your house is a mess and you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and wine along the way.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in weekly designated zones of the house; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with more time to do other, more interesting things instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again anyway!

We advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated (although some Fledglings find the compilation e-mails helpful)! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

More info here on getting started and Flying lessons. Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings. Don't be put off by the barf-tastic language of the site - the underlying system is sound (and you may discover a few of our subversions of the vocabulary along the way).

Huge thanks to Lauren for being our incredibly reliable and organised shining star in the East and leading us throughout the very busy month of December!!

Happy New Year Fledglings!!

All welcome!!

Belated happy birthdays to silvery
Very well done to gossip
Hope today wasn't too difficult for you and your family cuddled

Had a lazy evening yesterday as my first day back at work was exhausting. Today wasn't much better but I have more energy.

Ta Da

usual morning routine
usual teatime routine
a load of washing in and then hung up to dry
dry washing taken away
Monday and Tuesday's kitchen missions
meal planning and shopping ordered

Just having a cuppa then planning to do 15mins ironing. Then off for a bath and bed after evening routine.

superfluouscurves · 08/01/2013 20:16

Hello. Hope you've all had a good day.

No Flying to report but God was definitely trying to tell me something about weight loss this morning! Returning from the bathroom, I jumped back in to bed a bit more "energetically" than usual (sort of lengthwise!) (a) because I was anxious to hear about Bowie's new record (first in 10 yrs!) on Radio 4 and (b) because I was relishing having our double bed all to myself for once (dh being temporarily confined to a "sick bay" on another floor) - and all of a sudden I heard this loud crack followed by a splintering noise... and discovered that I had broken our brand new bed! Well, it's definitely under a year old and only an Ikea one (but not particularly cheap either)! Two of the slats that support the mattress had broken in two!! Blush Grin Dh and dd came running when they heard the noise and started crying with laughter when they saw the damage and they have been making hippopotamus jokes ever since!! Reckon I really need to get control of my diet as soon as possible!! Grin

Rest of time was bleurggh day taken up with hideousness at office (dh was supposed to be at home ill with flu, but was of course to be found at his desk and has gone back just now after supper too).

How have you all got on?

Cuddledup Sincere condolences. I hope today went as well as these things ever can. I hadn't realised the funeral was today. I hope it was of some comfort to you and your family. Thinking of you x

That's a good list you've got through there Goth

Well done for getting to grips with academic bureaucracy Castle and Smile at your horse enjoying his bed!

And you too Justgettingonwithit- sounds like a bureaucratic nightmare! Hope you can plough through it. And thanks for your kind words which are extremely reassuring. I really shouldn't be feeling sorry for myself because I haven't had half the difficulties that you have had to face. Hoping energy will return soon though!! Definitely could assist with decluttering your cold Christmas pud - one of my all time favourites!! Grin

[Snaffles Toffee's biccies instead] I so know what you mean about repetition and monotony btw.

Gossip that's fab news!! Congratulations!!!!!! Thanks

Hope your ds1 sleeps through without terrors tonight Loris and great that your efforts are being noticed! Hope ds3's gums feel a bit more comfortable soon!

You can write up your routines however it suits you Lilleth - just don't allow perfectionism to get in the way. The routines form the basis of the control journal that comes later on in the baby steps (no.s 11, 12 and 22). Flylady's pdf version available here Quick preview of how you go about setting up cj here

Bitchy Sorry to ask again (you must have given me the link about 5 times previously!!) but where do I find the baby-steps written out all in one place again please? I keep storing it on my computer and losing it!!

Sounds as though you are getting the whole family on board with Flying ¨Silvery well done!

Take care of your ankle Lplate (no wonder it is aching after everything you achieved yesterday!!) and well done with shiny sink/laying out of clothes! Thanks for info about backpack - relieved I don't have to add another job to list!!

I've given up with my dh Snowgirl! (Sorry to sound so negative but I reckon as he's 50 yrs now, he won't really change! Have to say, he's a hell of a lot better with hygiene than when I married him though!! Still have nightmares about the kitchen utensils/pots & pans that I inherited from him!)

Glad you are feeling a bit brighter today Ellie

Blue arf at 'Raising your spirited child' applying to you!! Grin I fear that is why I let dd get away with murder eg can hardly tell her off for having an untidy bedroom or being grumpy atm - would be the height of hypocrisy!! Blush!!

Whey hey at your Flying dh Whatkatydid Great the system is working for you both!

Hey Dizzy hope you have a lovely time with your ds today and "snap!" - I was a groom in a former life too (so we can be oddballs together! Smile)

Wewereherefirst oh do blame it on the autocorrect!! I absolutely loathe them!! Grin Think you have hit the nail on the head about professions and this thread (enforced advanced planning etc)!! (Doesn't quite explain why my house is still swimming in clutter 9 yrs after doing any formal publishing work but hey ho - let's just say it's taking me a decade to recover from the rigours of copy-editing Grin) Well done for getting your dh on board too!

Thank you Whoknows you sound v. on top of things! Well done!

Blimey gossipwitch that's a long list, I think it's easier to go to work than do that lot. Grin

Just managed to do ALL the ironing since my last post. Feeling very pleased with myself Smile

Cuddledup · 08/01/2013 21:39

Thanks Thanks A very big thank you to all of you for your kind messages of support regarding my dad's funeral. It was a lovely celebration of a lovely man. Lots of people came back for the funeral tea and they were very complimentary about the house - thank goodness nobody went upstairs and saw my hotspots!! Blush

The dishwasher is doing overtime tonight, and supper dishes are piled high but I'm too shattered to shine my sink. Hmm

I'm off work tomorrow and the day will be day spent happily FLYing and not procrastinating.

BitchyDragons · 08/01/2013 21:40

"Bitchy Sorry to ask again (you must have given me the link about 5 times previously!!) but where do I find the baby-steps written out all in one place again please? I keep storing it on my computer and losing it!!" Blush I have no fucking clue sc erm... and as i am on a borrowed computer don't have any book marks either. Will have a look when i get 5 mins but right now I need to be asleep. Night.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 08/01/2013 22:00

Babysteps here SC. If you lose it againgo to th Flylady homepage, scroll right down to a brownish box at the bottom and one of the links is Babysteps, it's that page.

Very little Flying here today. Never mind. Night all.

MercuryRising · 08/01/2013 22:00

Evening ladies.

Well done gossip you must be over the moon!

Im really sorry for your loss cuddled and am glad today went as well as it could.

Sc Im determined to shift some of the body clutter. I went to weight watchers tonight and two holidays, a family bereavement and christmas have resulted in me regaining all the weight i had lost. I was very Blush when I got off the scales. Oh well I am determined now.

I was volunteering in school today but was quite impressed that I actually managed to do some flying normally I don't get anything done. Maybe the system is actually starting to work for me Hmm

So ta da:
Dw
Washing hung out, second load in
Ss
Beds made
Lunches made for tomorrow
Ironing
Dinner
Pots washed
Sink shined

Big wing flaps and waves to everybody.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 08/01/2013 22:01

Cuddled - glad it went well today.

BitchyDragons · 08/01/2013 22:04

I think sc meant the one page list that summarised the babysteps whoknows just dipped into the site map and she does financial decluttering/babysteps too. [scared]

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 08/01/2013 22:07

They are all linked further down, I've never seen one where they are all listed out. not that I do half of them anyway

BlueEyeshadow · 08/01/2013 22:09

Evening all.

Today has been odd. Not at all what I was expecting, but hey ho. Tomorrow's another day and all that.

Gossip - congratulations!

Cuddled - that's good. I'm glad it went well as could be expected.

Toffee - we've been to the Isles of Scilly a couple of times - they're lovely and I'd love to go again but we can't afford it at the moment. Which island are you thinking of? Feel free to PM me if you like to avoid cluttering up the thread.

SC - oh dear, re bed. I hope you don't mind a small arf though!

Tomorrow is theoretically my house bleugh day, but I'm way too behind with paid work at the moment. Will see how it goes. At the moment I'm supposed to be ordering dinosaur party supplies and researching bathroom tiles and fittings. Better get back to it.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 08/01/2013 22:10

I looked at the site map too - scary!

BitchyDragons · 08/01/2013 22:16

unless she means the flight plan which summarises the day and the missions in one place.

Can't find the damm one list contains all page. i think it might have got zapped in the great website upgrade. still far too twee over there for my liking.

Also I did the mission for tomo yesterday Grin I like it when i am ahead. but as i am not looking at the other missions this week it will be the only one to have got done.

Thinking i need a list tomo:
up and moving
ds through shower and up and ready for school
label ds' trousers for school - bought tonight but too tired to label
label ds' new school shoes
get ds to school
register with web site
do a heap load of paperwork
meeting in next town
ds' swimming lesson
more paperwork
early night.

pushmepullyou · 08/01/2013 22:19

Just quickly catching up. Glad today went as well as it could cuddled, hope you get a good night's sleep tonight.

Yey gossip Grin

Was going to say I hadn't done any flying, but just realise I have inadvertenty managed today's mission, so hooray for me

Big hello to everyone else, laptop battery dying so I'm off to bed Grin

Snowgirl1 · 08/01/2013 22:44

Well done gossip!

Glad to hear the day was a nice celebration of your dad cuddled

I managed to do 15 mins decluttering, today's mission, have shined my sink and laid out DD and my clothes for tomorrow. How the heck does anyone with little 'uns and who works ever make it to detailed cleaning?! I guess I could cut out dinner... Just relaxing now with a Brew, ginger nut and a cat on my lap - but DH has already retired to bed so flying can be pretty antisocial Sad

SC I'm so grateful for you summarizing the flying stuff - I am being inundated with flylady emails and I would have got totally lost and given up without your summaries. See you all tomorrow.

justcrazy · 08/01/2013 22:50

Hi everyone, I have been lurking and feeling guilty as I read and then look round my house, so I am making an effort to improve things.

First thing to do was draw up a chore chart for my DC (dd 16 & DS 13) and make a point in asking DH to do bits and pieces as well. I work full time and often need to do work in the evening as well so tonight I have only managed the basics as was preparing resources until ten. On a positive DH dried up without moaning and DC did all their chores.

Cuddled I am sorry for your loss my thoughts are with you and your family.

TrazzleMISTLEtoes · 08/01/2013 23:18

Just running in. No time to read thread.

So sorry for your loss *cuddled

Well done gossip

At work tomorrow so minimal flying.

Today have been to hygienist and returned half a mountain of Tupperware to their rightful owners.

Also opened new Virgin contract to discover once again that they are incompetent idiots and I swear... If they lie to me ONE MORE TIME! Angry [hopping mad]

Labelled storage boxes in playroom and tidied some of the floor. Found that cat had weed on some stuff. Disposed of stuff. Argh.

ToffeeWhirl · 08/01/2013 23:25

Blue - thanks, I'll PM you tomorrow.

Cuddled - I'm glad it went well today. It's good that you have a day off work tomorrow, but don't do too much Flying. You'll need to rest after today.

justcrazy - chores for the DC sounds good. Did you know Flylady does a daily kids' challenge too?

SC - fabulous round up, as always.

Went to my first pilates class tonight [proud (at actually doing some exercise) emoticon].

DS1 and 2 both have upset tums and have been feeling sick, so am not sure what tomorrow holds...
