(With many thanks to Jdub for title inspiration!!)

If your house is a mess and you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and wine along the way.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in weekly designated zones of the house; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with more time to do other, more interesting things instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again anyway!

We advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated (although some Fledglings find the compilation e-mails helpful)! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

More info here on getting started and Flying lessons. Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings. Don't be put off by the barf-tastic language of the site - the underlying system is sound (and you may discover a few of our subversions of the vocabulary along the way).

Huge thanks to Lauren for being our incredibly reliable and organised shining star in the East and leading us throughout the very busy month of December!!

Happy New Year Fledglings!!

All welcome!!

oh no, I'm obsessed with checking to see what everyone else has been doing but am doing sweet FA myself Am hoping my laptop runs out of battery soon

SilveryMoon · 07/01/2013 12:58

Quick check in.
Hi snowthere's quite a few of us newbies here.
Dp took my car to garage this morning to find out what that flashing light is. Was told that if it's the gearbox then we're better off dumping it. Sad still waiting to hear from him.
I drove to work today. Fine although Dp gets a bit stressed and started shouting coz he thought I was going to hit the curb. He needs to get a little faith!
Works ok, just feels like we've not been away. I've been spat at, kicked, punched and had a box thrown at me and it's only lunch time. Deep breaths

LillethTheCat · 07/01/2013 13:03

Bit of a change of plan today. While I was out at my course, DD1s friend came round to ask if she wanted to walk the dog with them. Anyway DD1 was still in her PJs and DH agreed for me to go round with DD1 this afternoon. Though the plan was to let DS and DD1 have a long bath while having their music on (DD2 will just get a wash and be in and out), but now it will have to be a bit later.

tada

  • Strip DCs beds
  • wash bedding
  • dry bedding (drying first load now)
  • Go to course
  • Make sure everything is ready for school tomorrow

to do

  • wash up 3X (might delogate DH to do the first one if we get up late)
  • Shine Sink
  • Dry Bedding
  • remake beds (only have one set each for them so all has to be done in the same day, have decided today though to get spare)
  • Fill washing machine ready for Tues
  • Sort out what Im going to wear on Tuesday (have just looked at Flylady to see what the next babystep is as I wont get on till tomorrow lunch)
  • Go to Play date with DD1
  • Ring up adult learning services to check Im on level 2 of one of my courses as Ive had no confirmation regarding that

Hope you are all having a good day.

Ignoring the lounge room in favour of the kitchen, working from the mission. At the moment though I think the kitchen actually looks worse!! Sigh....

But so far

tada

  • DS1 up, fed, dressed with school bag and (VERY reluctantly) out the house and off to school (DH kindly went into work late and did the school run so that I didn?t have to do the walk, and take DS2 with me)
  • DS2 fed and calmed down (has had a lot of together time with big brother!)
  • 1 load of of washing done and hung up
  • 3 backpacks through washing machine and dryer
(and ready for storage)
  • 1 load of washing in machine
  • breakfast dishes all in dishwasher
  • kitchen counters tidied
  • drink bottles all washed (but still on draining board)
  • declutter, decobweb, dust and degrime above cupboards on LHS of kitchen
  • declutter 1 box (sitting 'temporarily'Hmm in the kitchen)
  • decutter arear radiator (including stuff which has fallen behind the radiator!)
LPlateFlyer · 07/01/2013 13:39

Snow - under Mumsnet Talk click on 'customise'. That is where you can change the colour of the OP's posts, Mumsnet posts and your own posts.

droitwichmummy · 07/01/2013 13:40

My goodness - I had forgotten how much you lot can chat!

Had a go at DH at the weekend for his lack of effort and have left him with a list this morning. Last day of school hols here (TE day) so have kept it quite short but it involves finding the sink and cleaning it as well as putting the vacuum round and putting some washing on.

Tomorrow's list will be longer because he wants to go fishing on Wednesday (why couldn't he go on Saturday Confused)

Hello to all the new or returning flyers, waving to everyone else. Have spent the last few days absorbing our situation and what I can and can?t do about it. Was hoping to be back with good news but it?s a touch thin on the ground, so best I just live up to my moniker.

SC Never have I started a year less prepared or with more can't-be-arsed-ness or or with more clutter... you and me both m?dear. Don?t worry we?ll get our second wind later.

Lady Dierdre Your best chance of getting a ?might come in useful? hoarder to chuck medications is to prove they?re not of use/ potentially dangerous etc. Asking if they?re safe to give to a child (not as a theory) can bring different responses than asking if they?re safe for you.

Lplate the friend was the one I listen to daily, and try to support, but can?t at the level she needs/wants.

Trazzle glad to see chemo went reasonably.

Peppa Thanks congratulations!

Apologies for no more personals but I need to shift my backside.

Still to do
Finish washing
Launderette for drying
Repair skirt and d/s jeans (preferably in launderette
p/up d/s
psychology
get d/s to finalize UCAS stuff
Basics shopping
write up h/ed paperwork
dinner
eat up Christmas pud
Listen to friend
work out what I've forgotten!
Sleep!

MrsPennyapple · 07/01/2013 15:40

Someone send me to the naughty corner. I got up and did the morning routine, then parked DD in front of the TV and did some knitting. That is very bad indeed. But the house was mostly clean and tidy due the the blitz DP and I did yesterday on account of having visitors. That's my excuse anyway. It was only for about half an hour, and then I got my act together and we went shopping. DD fell asleep on the way home so I did more knitting. Blush

But I did make the batter for tonight's toad in the hole, so that's good, right? Right?

laurenamium · 07/01/2013 15:47

mrsP you are still having a better day then me. count it as delayd renewing spirit and just be productive for a little bit if you feel guilt. But other wise the fly lady system is designed for a little and often so you can do and get other things done.

ta da
Up and ready for going out -including scrambled eggs for breakfast and a proper pot of coffee -luxuary--
15mins of laundry folding
Early training
Buy eggs for breakfasts
come home and try to sleep for an hour so can function - actually slept about 5hrs
Collect ds from school and speak to teacher (on report so this is on daily atm)

So as you can see not got done most of the to do list. Infact, must scroll back and find out what my to do list was as I can't remember it.

SilveryMoon · 07/01/2013 17:56

Morning routine done
Go to work done
After school routine in the middle of
Before bed routine done a few bits
Check links/website for babystep and mission done
Do babystep done
Do mission/detail
Filing done

Bed

Today's my birthday. A bit Sad that it will be spent ironing. Or not. Am feeling a little de-motivated.
I emptied the chip pan this morning and have cleaned it and put more oil in (we rarely use it so not sure why I bother) so might count that as the detail cleaning for today.
Mission? I'm feeling a little meh, someone give me a kick up the bum.

Hello all, have done bugger all today, well I tell a fib, what I did do was aimlessly clear around children for them to put more crap in its place, dp has started painting the bathroom and I have reserved new things to go in it, I have had another driving lesson and filled the dishwasher twice, and cooked a chicken roast diner all whilst supervising children to make sure they are not scrapping. and for some reason I have a banging headache and feel really tired, and I also have the test tomorrow which I'm starting to get nervous about, just laughing at ds3 who has just exclaimed that he found rubbun (robin from batman), that child has me in bits.

superfluouscurves · 07/01/2013 19:29

Good evening everyone. Hope you have all survived your first day back in the real world (although I know some of you have been back at the coal face for a while!).

Bad things about today: dh is really ill with flu, I only did half my list, I didn't get to art acad and won't tomorrow (to do with school/ballet runs and dh being ill and baby-sitter not back from her holiday), central heating broke down

Good things about today: I did half my list Grin, I found someone who fixed central heating, I am going to bed early, dd's presentation (the one she hadn't studied) was delayed until next week!

[Warbles] "Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday Dear Silvery, Happy Birthday to you!" Thanks Sorry you are feeling a bit meh... many happy returns from all us fledglings and well done for getting through your list! x (Just read that you were spat at today - I'm so sorry - that's awful.)

Special wing flaps to Trazzles!!

A very warm welcome to Snowgirl1 You are right, the Flylady site is confusing (especially as her whole system is based on concise, clear steps!!) That is partly why this thread was set up originally (although to be fair, Flylady website has improved a lot since then). Best to go to home page and read "getting started", "launch pad" and anything I have linked in op and just have a general look around the site. There is also a Flylady book available called [I'm afraid to say] 'Sink Reflections' available on Amazon.

As others have said, the best way to receive the thread leader's posts highlighted in green (my posts as it happens this month) is to go to Mumsnet Talk>then Welcome>then Getting Started>then Customising Talk and from there I think you choose the Mumsnet Classic option in order to be able to easily spot my daily Flying links. Hope that makes sense! Don't hesitate to ask again if not.

¨Bitchy thanks for reminder - must get organised with regard to breakfasts myself. Not on top of (weight loss) meal planning quite yet.

Yo to Lauren! Organised as ever! And "respect" re: your daily routine. I'm always impressed by daily hoovering (although I know that is necessary for your job - still impressive though). I have bungalow envy too (far too many stairs here).

MrsPennyapple- No need to occupy naughty corner imo! As Bitchy says, Flying is a bit like weight loss - you can assess progress properly over a full week or month - so indiv days here and there won't necessarily have negative impact - as long as you keep going overall ifyswim. The whole idea is that the work is done in concerted chunks leaving you more time to more interesting stuff, such as ... knitting! The fact that you have been able to sit and knit today just shows how you are making a success of the system!! Smile

Thank you for the reassurance Justgettingonwithit - really is needed and appreciated right now. I need to adopt your moniker too and stop feeling sorry for myself! Sorry you don't have good news. Keep hoping for you ...

Sorry to hear the chore division is still getting you down Mummy It's a tough one to handle.

Well done Lplate you've done loads today in your kitchen and there's always a stage when it looks worse before it starts getting better!! Sounds as though you have really started to tackle the worst of it though. (And you've got me worried now as to whether I should be washing dd's backpack. I'm afraid it only gets wiped out with a damp j-cloth every half term. Never thought about putting it in the wm!)

Lplate & Engels yes, being an expat definitely does have its ups and downs!! I've certainly felt much more rooted here since I had dd, especially since she is immersed in Belgian (not international) school, but Bxls can seem a bit soul-less, loads of nationalities all mixed up together (which is GREAT!) but then majority move on after 2 or 3 years (not so great!). Also, I desperately want to live in the country and this is a very urban environment. We are luckier than most though because dh does have Flemish relations on his side because of his mother's duel nationality.

Arf at Whatkatydid!! [Pssst... don't tell anyone ....I am much better at reading and writing about Flying than actually doing it... who am I kidding everyone knows this anyway] Looking at your lists, you have done really well today though!!

Snap Wewereherefirst I worked in publishing in a former life too!! (Don't look at my spelling/grammar/typos now though!!) Turns out we are all teachers or former editors on this thread Hmm!!

Judging from your list, you are doing just fine Doublemum Smile

ComradeJing my morning routine is virtually identical Whoknow's except for making packed lunch in the morning ( only have one dd). If you go to my post on Sat 5th at 21:29:45 see two links I posted for Loris - egs of Flylady's routines in response to similar question. Well done with the unpacking!!

Waves to Lilleth Mercury Whoknows Toffee Judb and Goth all your lists seem v. organised and well planned.

Waves to everyone else (Swan hope you are ok!)

Back in a mo with links!
