Tell me about your hall furniture

After moving house we now have more than enough room to swing a cat (compared to our old hall) :)

So, we need some sort of furniture to hold shoes, gloves, hats etc.

What do you have? :)

A proper hat, coat and umbrella stand and a big wooden box / seat thing. That is all I like big empty uncluttered spaces :)

I've got a row of hooks for coats. two bookcases. a little fridge. (it's covered in this wood effect stuff and made to look like a cupboard. don't ask.) and where the stairs turn there is a little corner table with some nick nacks on it.

a pile of shoes. school bags and a saxophone. tsk.

and there's a huge mirror and some paintings. but that's not what you were asking Grin

whe have just had the builders in and re done the kitchen and hall, its brilliant now.

loads of room and we went to laura ashley for the curtains and pillows, they even had a big sturdy wicker box for all the shoes. then to harrods for some more luxury items.

looks fab. het there if you can have some lovely stuff, cheap as well.

WillSingForCake · 16/12/2012 21:46

I've got this this from Next (the large console) with 4 wicker boxes on it for hats, bags etc. Have an under staircase cupboard for shoes.

I've got the tall Hemnes shoe cabinet from Ikea on one wall and a row of coat pegs with a shelf above for baskets of hat, gloves, scarves etc. I wanted an antique telephone table rather than a shoe cabinet but DH persuaded me that practicality was more important. We have a beautiful antique oak framed mirror above it which works really well and overall it actually looks really rather nice IMO. It certainly is brilliant for hiding away a ton of shoes.

juliex · 16/12/2012 22:30

got to say i do love oak, especially dark oak. not sure on ikea though, is it strong enough?

ViperInTheManger · 16/12/2012 22:30

Mrs MiniversCharlady We have a little vestibule and, like you, have the Hemnes shoe cabinet and a row of coatpegs in that. I do not usually like Ikea stuff as it is too modern for our house but the shoe cabinet is so plain it looks quite traditional and, you are right, it is very practical.

In the hall itself we have a mahogany console table, a mahogany grandfather clock and a large mirror on the wall above the radiator

HA! we barely have enough room to get in through the door never mind to put furniture in it.
Honestly the wall with the front door on it has about 6" either side the oppsite door has the stairs on one side and 2" on the other. The window is smack opposite the stairs with 2" on one side and 18" on the other which has the main electric box on it so we can't put any shelving there.
We tend to put coats on the banister, only the one you wear most as there is no room to put others there. Shoes are under the radiator under the window and it is so narrow that I end up running over them with the pram.

My mums hallway is huge about 8' wide and 12' long. There is also a huge understairs space which me and dsis used to play under. And she has 2 built in hall cupboards so no clutter.

What storage could I use in such a small space?

Violet77 · 17/12/2012 07:34

We have a boot room :-) lots of pegs, shoe stands and baskets. My hallway has just a table.

Sorry no help.

Bonsoir · 17/12/2012 08:22

Our hall has a huge walk-in coat and boot cupboard built in. If I didn't have one, I would build in a large coat cupboard. Coat stands are dreadful things.

FreshWest · 17/12/2012 09:35

There is a bit of room near the front door so we have something like this. Not that one as ours was waaaaay cheaper from The Range but they haven't got it any more. Hides all our shoes Xmas Smile
As the hallway narrows there is a radiator on the wall with a large mirror above it.
We also have a cupboard under the stairs which hides the Hoover and all manner of other tat.

Startail · 17/12/2012 10:05

House came with long row of strong coat hooks. We put a long shelf with baskets for hats gloves, sun hats and small rucksacks above it.

DH built a custom shoe rack under it.

Sadly our hall is too narrow for the door to open with a nice bench.

PigletJohn · 17/12/2012 11:12

An old-fashioned hatstand next to the front door which takes the coats, also a wine-rack Xmas Shock with solid shelves which happens to be just right for holding outdoor/indoor shoes

A small table for Putting Things On. Avoid the temptation to fill it up with ornaments and objets trouves. Has a small drawer where the gas-meter key and the downstairs screwdivers live, and a torch, plus other worthless junk.

The keysafe is in the kitchen, and no keys are left near the door, especially car keys, which people like to snatch, or fish through the letterbox.

A full-length mirror to the side of the front door.

A seat or bench is useful.

more pegs away from the front door or under the stairs for all the other coats. Has a shelf above it for hats and gloves that nobody ever wears, or for gardening, and a heap of boots and shoes that no-one ever wears.
