Have I ruined my stainless steel hob?

I used Cillit Bang limscale remover on it and now around one ring, there is extensive marbled markings like rusty and white water marks?

I am a half wit. But is there anything I can do to make it all better, please? It's only 6 months old.

Could it be residue or is it the actual metal?

I'd be temped to use a cream cleaner and water to see if it shifts.

I am afraid to say yes. I did exactly the same thing! Mine was only 2 weeks old (aah). I could have kicked myself for using somthing so strong on a new hob. I still have the hob, don't notice it so much now it is older, more scratched and less shiny. It is only money and metal. I very rarely use cillit bang on anything now.

It will probably be only superficial. Try either some Cif cream cleaner or some brasso metal wadding.

Cillit bang is radioactive imo.

That's why Barry Scott is so shouty. It's done something to him.

If it's any consolation I had a cheapo steel cooker once, and I used a sponge on it with the dark green side which you shouldn't use on non stick - and it scratched it all over the top. I was so annoyed with myself.

Enamelled all the way now!

It is probably acidity in the Cillit interfering with the protective layer that Stainless forms when in contact with the air. It is very difficult to make stainless corrode or tarnish unless something is used that interferes with the protection it forms. Salt will also do it except on special marine grades.

I would suggest cleaning it off with a nylon pan scourer (white is softer than green) and just plain water with a drop of WUL. The coating will be far softer than the steel. Polish off with a clean damp cotton vest rag.

Only ever rub the scourer in the direction of the brushing, never in circles as it will always show.

p.s.

I find it very difficult to grasp the idea of "ruining" stainless because it is so durable. If you buy mirror finish it will show marks and scratches, so I'd always prefer brushed finish. You can even put a new brushed effect on it with a brillo pad but it will look a bit amateurish. As I said, only ever rub in one direction.

I just tried washing up liquid on a slightly abrasive sponge and it has worked - not perfect but has helped a lot - my oven front is brushed stainless steel
