How to clean a ceramic oil burner?

I've had my oil burner a while (you know the ones with little tea-light that gently warms the liquid above), and a residue has built up in the part where the oil/water sits. It has become quite hard and difficult to remove. Does anyone have any tips? I've tried soaking it and also scrubbing with CIF so far.....

do you mean soot?

You could try leaving vinegar in it overnight, that seems to shift most things. If that doesn't work, then you could try using bicarbonate of soda and giving it a good scrub.

No, not the soot Piglet, but the oil residue.

Thanks Boris, I'll give those a go.

if it is oxidised oil traces, try white spirit, or WD40, and rub it with a bit of rag.

Thanks Piglet, I'll give that a go!
