Brand Name v Supermarket Washing Powder??

Have used washing powder of the cheaper variety for years but since changing washing machine have found it doesn't work as well.

Does the likes of Ariel, Daz (is that still around?!) Bold make a huge difference to stain removal.

Ditto the same question for fabric conditioner.

Tia Xmas Smile

After only ever using branded stuff I've started using Sainsbury's own bio powder and couldn't be happier.

So coming at it from the opposite side I'd say it's as good if not better but I haven't tried any others.

hugoagogo · 13/12/2012 22:24

Nope, I don't think name washing powder is any better.

It seems your washing machine is not as good; is it new?

elah11 · 14/12/2012 12:24

I use the cheapo supermarket stuff here and it does the job!

TeamBacon · 14/12/2012 12:26

Lidl stuff is great, and about £6 for 60 washes. I do find own brand stuff clumps in the drawer a bit more - maybe doesn't dissolve as much?

BaconAndAvocado · 14/12/2012 19:58

No our "new" washing machine has actually been lurking in the garage for 7 years!

Used to use Aldi powder in old machine, was fine.

Will give the lidl stuff a go.

Currently using some French washing powder which DH's mate gave us (x 2 boxes.....)

I've always been a Persil enthusiast (it contains more bleaching agents than most, so is very good for whites but not colours) and was taken aback to see in the "Which" reports that Aldi Almat is better at half the price.

The washer stays cleaner (especially the drawer) if you put the scoop of powder in through the door.

Low temperatures used with bio liquids encourage build-up of mould and sludge in the machine.

The liquids do not contain bleach so are better for colours but not so good for dazzling whites,.

You should see my office shirts Xmas Smile

I use Aldi. It works great but doesn't have the strong perfumed scent of Fairy or Aerial if that bothers you. I don't care but dp finds it an issue for some reason.

SellotapeInMyHairExtensions · 15/12/2012 14:08

I use Aldi Almat, prior to that I used whatever branded stuff was on special offer.

I use the gel for everything except whites. For whites I use powder, it sounds a faff but I only have school shirts, underwear, etc for a white wash so its only one load a week.

BaconAndAvocado · 17/12/2012 19:26

Aldi Almat it is then!

Piglet, do you just put the powder in the drum on top of the washing? I hate cleaning the washing machine drawer.

PigletJohn · 17/12/2012 19:42

yes, but towards the back of the drum avoids it getting stuck on the glass dome of the door.

PixieHot · 17/12/2012 20:00

Thanks Smile.

MousyMouse · 17/12/2012 21:53

I think the main difference is the scent.
having said that, bio washes much better than non bio.
I also put the powder directly into the drum, then the washing on top.

BaconAndAvocado · 18/12/2012 18:00

Good tip, will give it a try!

daisydoodoo · 18/12/2012 18:05

thanks for the tip about powder for whites. I was wondering why despite high temperature washes and regular cleaning of the washing machine school shirts were still going grey.

I use whatever gel/liquid that is on offer or sainsburys own brand gel if no offers. I hadn't noticed a huge difference tbh. my machine is a 6 month old whirlpool one.

dishwashervodkaanddietirnbru · 18/12/2012 18:43

liquids dont contain bleaches which is why they wont leave whites looking as white as the powders do. I use bio powder for most of my washing but have started using a colours liquid for my black stuff as they were fading quite a bit with the powder

JennyPiccolo · 18/12/2012 18:44

Aldi one is really good.

wrinklyraisin · 18/12/2012 20:44

I use Charlie's laundry soap liquid. Fabulous stuff. Only need a teeny bit, it gets clothes clean, soft and fresh without all the chemicals and crap in brand laundry detergents.
