Please can u you help me. I am cleaning my aunt's aparttment and down the side of her slot in electric cooker on the kitchen unit is covered in dried in oil and grease ( both sides!!!). What is the best way to clean it. Astonish scouring cream not doing much to it. Thanks in advance.

maybe a steam cleaner would lift it?

Barkeeper's Friend?

scourer and barkeepers are both abrasive so will wear away the enamel, especially on edges and corners.

the problem is that the fat has oxidised into a hard or sticky varnish. It is not so hard that a cream will do it.

Usually swabbing with a GP cleaner like Flash, and leaving it to soak in, will soften the old fat, then it will scrub off with a stiff nylon brush, which will not abrade the enamel. If necessary you can use a nylon scourer, dipped in Flash. You will need two, as they will clog, and throw one into the bucket to wash away while you use the other. A nylon brush will also get into the seams and crevices.

if the units have plastic laminate on the sides (very hard, you can't mark it with a thumbnail or balpoint) flash will still be good, but take care not to let it soak into the cut edges of the board at the bottom or any screw-holes. If it is vinyl-wrap (peels off with heat and can be marked with a thumbnail) it is quite delicate and easily damaged.
