Dog poo

My aging dog had a bit of an upset tummy a few weeks back and did a poo on the rug (this is not a regular occurence I hasten to add). I cleaned it up straight away obviously but ended up rolling the rug up and have not used it since as I am paranoid about the germs on it due to having a 6 month old who is starting to roll off her play mat as she tries to learn to crawl. There's no smell or stain as I cleaned it up within minutes of him doing it but I want to put the rug back down as we have a hard laminate flooring which isn't ideal for lying a play mat on. (If he had to have an accident, why he couldn't have pooed on that which would have been easy to clean, I don't know.) Most carpet cleaners are obsessed with making things smell fresh, but I want it to be hygienically clean so I can put the play mat back down. Wuld I be better cleaning up with diluted solution of dettol or something similar, or does Vanish, for example, clean up the germs? It doesn't say anything on the side about killing 99.9999% of germs like bleach and other household cleaners do.

I wouldnt be worried about germs so much as roundworm which can pass to people. Make sure he is up to date with his worming - speak to your vet

Thanks for replying. He had his last worming treatment in May so should be fine on that front.

I don't think many of the germs in poo live very long after leaving the warm body. I agree with Nigglenaggle, parasites are more likely than e.coli.

If it's been cleaned and not pooed on since, I would feel comfortable using it. Maybe a mild bleach spray will make you feel better about it?

I would worm him at least every 3 months with something decent - Drontal/Milbemax/Advocate/Stronghold are a few.
