How do you store children's books so they don't drive you up the cocking wall?

We have a million books in a million different sizes. Most of them are in DD's bedroom, where there is a bookcase with lots of shelves. Some of the time they books are on the bookcase in size order, looking lovely. Most of the time they are scattered all over the floor, pretty much over most of upstairs. Some are sometimes piled on childsize chairs in her room, but also mainly live on the floor.

Some have migrated downstairs, where they either go on a shelf or on a coffee table. But - guess what? - mainly they are on the bloody bloody floor.

Any suggestions on how I can store them so they don't need to be tipped out on the floor the whole time and doesn't take forever to put them away again?

Get a solid wooden box or a basket, and stand the picture books up in it. Teach DD to 'flip' the books as she looks through them, and to replace the books the right way up.
It's great that your DD loves her books so much and likes looking at them, but IMO if she is old enough to look at them, she's old enough to be taught to keep them tidy.

I bought cheap curtain rods from IKEA, then used old curtains to make slings for the books.

Box with them standing so DS can flick through and pick the bloody same few every night.

Add more boxes as they multiply exponentially thanks to DMIL, DF & other random relatives.

I bought a wire rack (the kind that you find in schools), so thin books can be displayed with the front cover showing.

I got a thing from tidy books, will try and link, and I rotate the books.

Bit pricey but got mine as a bargain on eBay :)

Thanks Think I'll start with a box and see how we get on ... Love the Tidy Box and the sling ones I've seen but they are pricey, particularly when neither seems all that hard to DIY (though beyond my capabilities, granted).

when he was small books lived in a box. Now he has 3 low book shelves, books over 12 inchs tall only fit on two of teh three shelves. 2 shelves are in his room and on is under the end of this desk in living room. every couple of days I round up stray books and shove them on a shelf. I do this for me as well as him as my books tend to pile up too.

Half are on the bookshelf (the big, fat or board books) and the other half are in two magazine baskets which works well for the a4ish sized thin books.

Ikea trofast with the small trays.

Most are on the bookcases in the DSs bedroom, some are on a shelf on the bookcase downstairs.

DS2 is 20 months and likes to pull them all out looking for the one he wants. DS1 is 4.4 and has learnt to be tidy with them.

DS is 2 and has more books than me. He has a large but shallow-ish cardboard box in his room that I covered in nice wrapping paper. The books are all kept in there, standing up so he can flip through them. Sort of like how you used to see records sold in shops if you're old enough (like me!) to know what I mean!

Cheap, simple and means he can easily access and choose books by their covers.

Ours are on the main bookshelf in the front room with a little chair next to it for reading purposes.

I would rather make room for them than many other things.I think they need to be easily available and simple to find. I don't worry about tidiness - they are higgledy-piggledy.

I would rather store some of my own books to make room for theirs if necessary.
