1 washload per week per person- doable?

admittedly i have a huge backlog of washing so it will be as many washes as i can dry a day until it's cleared but is it unrealistic to aim for doing just 1 wash per person per week once i have the backlog cleared? there is me, ds1 (7) and ds2 (3). they both wear uniforms everyday, ds1 has 3 sweaters, about 10 pairs of trousers (my mum went a bit mad!) and 6 poloshirts. ds2 has 1 jumper, 2 poloshirts and 4 pairs of trousers (but gets covered in paint and needs washed almost daily). ds2 is also not 100% reliable on telling me when he needs a poo so there can be accidents some days. add into that, my clothes ( i try to wear outer layers a few times before washing) and bedlinen and towels. i have a 8kg washing machine. am i being unrealistic?

Theres only two of us while DSD is at uni and in a week I do:
1 whites
1 coloureds
1 bedding
1 towels/tea towels ( usually 4 bath towels, 3 hand towels and 7 tea towels)
1 dog bedding
1 cotton rugs

when DSD is home from uni its like a chinese laundry Smile

There is me, dh and 6yo and 4yo. I do washing 5 days out of 7. I don't think you can get away with 1 load per person.

By washing this frequently I never ever we a washing backlog.

kige · 28/10/2012 20:01

HAVE not we!

NuzzleandScratch · 28/10/2012 20:02

Not really Chipping, although I'll admit I hadn't really thought about that aspect before. Not really an issue at the moment though, as dd1 can eat tidily now, and dd2 is just on milk! I suppose if there was a bad stain, I might treat it or rinse it straight away.

I also do what you do with putting clothes to wear again on a chair (jeans for example). Although the untidiness of this bothers me a bit, but I don't see an alternative.

yes bran i think you are right about ds2's uniform. i think i'll get him 2 more jumpers and 4 more t-shirts (they come in packs of 2 and i'd like to have 3 more) maybe another 2 pack of jogging bottoms aswell.

wrt to dc clothes that they can wear again, they have a basket each (the wobbly mini laundry kind). either their pj's are in there or the dayclothes at night. whenever they change I have a quick check if anything can be worn again, needs a sponge or the wash. then put in whatever dc need to change into next morning/bedtime.

Being

Off topic but you mentioned you do not have a CH thermostat.

I think if you have one fitted it will pay for itself in a single winter in fuel economy and give you a more comfortable home. You need a timer as well but can get a programmable thermostat now that enables you to set different temperatures at different times of day and different days of the week.

But I am bitterly opposed to draping wet washing around the house or over radiators because it causes condensation, damp and mould.

thanks pigletjohn. i'm a private tenant so will ask landlord if it's a possibility. it really is stifling after just half an hour. i'm lucky in that i'm in between two houses and the house is so far warm enough without heating (although not enough to dry washing iyswim). not sure what it will be like in colder months as i only moved in in june.

Excluding towels and sheets, I wash 1-2 loads a week for me and 2 DC. It' doable. you just need to check everything before it goes in the wash, and sponge more uniform.
