White vinegar for clothes: how to use?

ShiftyFades · 26/10/2012 20:43

I have bought some white vinegar to deodorise some clothes (the ones that still smell in the arm pit area).
How do I actually use it?!!
Washing gel in washing?
Vinegar in softener bit?
Do I not use softener at all?
How much should I use?
Should I soak the really crusty ones?!! (DH's "work" stuff)?
Help!!

Soft towels come from, tumble drying. If you don't have a TD you're doomed to crunchy ones :(

Vinegar seems to make mine smell all fresh and clean even though my filter badly needs cleaning out (I've tried but can't get the thing off Blush)

Oops, rogue comma there!

Fabric softener puts a kind of coating on the clothes which can make them feel soft but some people think it makes them feel weird, almost slimy or greasy.

Agree with salamanger- halo sports wash is great stuff!

What's the consensus on using detergent as well?

Normal wash with normal detergent but the fabric softener drawer bit filled up with white vinegar?

And you agree it works primarily for husband pits deodourising things rather than softening.

I just spray white vinegar on the underarms, and add washing powder and fabric conditioner as usual. I sometimes give it a while to work, sometimes not.

i've just put on a wash with fabric softener. i only added a quarter of the amount it recomended on the bottle (tightarse Grin) so it might not have the effect i want but it's just a clothes wash, not towels so they dont go crunchy anyway.

FaintingGhost · 03/11/2012 11:20

No TD here. Looks like my towels are going to stay crunchy.

Underwater I used detergent as well, and filled up the fabric softener compartment with vinegar.

Detergent as normal, white vinegar in the fabric conditioner drawer = fresh smelling clothes and bye bye to smelly pits Grin

Wash as normal the rest of the time Grin

ok so when i took the clothes out of the machine i could smell the fabric softener, not strong but enough for me to notice. but then i hung the clothes out and when i brought them back in again the smell is gone Grin. but i do have that lovely line dried smell now in my hotpress. i suppose it's a bit of a waste of money if i'm just buying it for the smell and then hanging the stuff out to dry.

ShiftyFades · 03/11/2012 19:41

Never thought of it like that Grin
Mine is all on the airer as I'm drying indoors, even thought it was nice today, our garden is a building site atm do I've no chance of hanging outside Sad

I never use softener (but do iron everything and I think that that also makes a difference). I always use a washing powder rather than liquid and add a scoop of Oxy Vanish (or Oxy white) except when it is wool or silk. Seems to work, stains come out, no smells.
