Fabric Softener for one year old

We started using the standard issue non-bio, recommended for babies one when DD was born. Neither DH nor I like it - we don't have a tumble dryer and it leaves out bath towels, etc not very soft and really quite scratchy. (They are nice thick cotton towels from John Lewis, and were fine before.) At what age can I go back to using "proper" fabric softener? In the great grand scheme of things, waiting even a long time is fine to protect baby's skin, but she's a year old now. I'm sure I don't have to wait for her to turn 18, so when? I feel like an idiot for not knowing.

Oh bless you for worrying. Unless anyone has awful skin problems, just use any fabric conditioner you like.

I quite like the white Lenor and the yellow Comfort ones at the moment. I used the white comfort for my PFB temporarily but, you know, it doesn't really matter Grin

a non-bio fabsoft? Aren't they all?

Thamesmead · 16/09/2012 13:40

Have I totally fallen for the marketing hype? I can understand about bio v non bio detergents if skin is sensitive, but am missing my soft clothes. The only skin condition is DH's - he has psoriasis, but always has and it hasn't improved (or worsened) with this softener. And he complains about the itchy towels more than I do!

We've always used whatever, whenever - and that includes in other countries like Canada where non-bio doesn't really even exist (I think because none of their machines seem to really wash with hot water - just water from the tank which isn't hot by the time the machine is full).

Unless you have issues with bio, you can use bio whenever you want (I didn't think that fabric softener had any enzymes in it at all though, so I don't see how it can be bio or non-bio)

save your money and put it in a jar for a water-softener.

I certainly wouldn't put it on towels, it decreases their absorbency.
I'm weaning my family off it, see here.

we always used bio stuff and fabric softner even when the kids were babies

IvanaNap · 17/09/2012 10:30

I thought fabric softener wasn't supposed to be used on towels anyway Confused that is could be the cause of your scratchy, non-absorbent towels?

crazybutterflylady · 17/09/2012 20:38

I was surprised to learn (after having washed all my pfb clothes in non-bio) that we are the only european country to recommend this for babies. Most places don't even have non-bio detergents! I started washing her clothes in normal ariel liquid at about 2 mo. we have a family history of eczema and asthma (i can't use all in one stuff for this reason) so was worried initially, but she is fine!

Thamesmead · 17/09/2012 23:48

Our towels absorb just fine, and used to be soft as well!
