So, how likely am I to come downstairs to an infestation of flies in the kitchen tomorrow morning?

It all starts with a holiday. Bear with me, the flies will come later. We came back from 3 weeks away last Sunday. A neighbour had been feeding our cat and throwing the empty food sachets into the bin. Not long after we got home dh emptied said bin. He shouted out to me that we had mice and he'd found droppings. I doubted this, as the cat is a loopy killer and would've seen off any mice well before they'd had time to poo. But there were small, brown dropping like things on the floor under and around the bin. We decided they were some kind of eggs or pupae and threw them out.

Today, we came home to find around 15 big fat newly hatched, slightly moist (boak) and dopey flies clinging to our kitchen windows and door. We shooed them out. More kept appearing. I looked under the bin and a couple of pupae were stuck on the underside. So I screamed a bit and threw the bin out of the back door.

Since then a couple more flies have appeared. We don't know where they are coming from.

This leads me to my opening question.

How many of the f*ers can we expect? We've had around 25 so far. We got rid of about 15 pupae when we got back from holiday. We have looked under kitchen cupboards but haven't found any more pupae.

Will the kitchen be a swarming black mass by the morning? My skin is crawling, I've lost my appetite and I keep seeing black things that aren't there out of the corner of my eye.

Book into a hotel that way you won't be there to see how many there are in the morning!

GobblersKnob · 12/09/2012 19:46

They are probably under your bed.

Or all in your food.

FermezLaBouche · 12/09/2012 19:47

Oh oh oh oh ohhhhhh :(
My arm hairs are standing on end.

Just thank your lucky stars you weren't there at maggot stage.

Spink · 12/09/2012 19:48

Argh. We are eating risotto tonight. Dh has already come out with "You are eating maggots, Michael".

I bet maggots are very nutritious though Grin

FermezLaBouche · 12/09/2012 19:54

No they are NOT! They are evil, wriggling things that infest my wheelie bin on an annual basis. EVERY single body hair now standing on end.

To add to the horror that is today, the cat just tried to bring in a frog. The frog was screaming. Screaming, I tell you. It could probably sense the flies.

Maybe you could whip this up for dinner tomorrow?

Grin

Crying at the cat fetching you a frog, how helpful is that? Grin

FermezLaBouche · 12/09/2012 20:11

Well there goes any chance of an interrupted night's sleep. Thanks Gobblers and Spink

Where is the screaming frog now??

PigletJohn · 12/09/2012 20:54

fly spray and hoover up the dead ones.

But if you leave the windows open the live ones will fly out. They are attracted to light

(but the maggots crawl towards the dark)

Spink · 12/09/2012 20:58

Screaming frog hopped away once the cat had been restrained. We hope we won't see (hear) it again..

Gobblers I would say thank you but I am trying not to vomit.

Good news is NO NEW HATCHINGS since i first posted. Hurrah!

Piglet thanks for the advice.. sadly we jsut have french windows i.e. doors and a back door, neither can be left opened without reducing our security to a truly dangerous level Wink

Note to self (and anyone else thinking of being "clever") DO NOT type "maggot infestation" into google. Some things are best unimagined. :(

Spink · 12/09/2012 21:16

Fermez you just made me snort
