Batch cooking - what the hell do you put yours in?!

Biggem · 08/09/2012 10:11

Due to DC2's impending arrival I am on a batch cooking mission in the next week or so, I did the same before DD but failed to find any decent containers to put it all in.
What do you / have you used? My tescos has sweet f all in.
I'm thinking lasagnes, stews, Bolognasie, curries etc
Thanks!

I just discovered a batch cooking category on the Good Food website yesterday.

brandysoakedbitch · 08/09/2012 10:16

I use poor and store bags for sloppy stuff and you can buy foil tray things for lasagne. Not very green I know to have disposible stuff but ideal with a new baby as can just chuck away after. But pour and store bags are the way ahead.

vodkaanddietirnbru · 08/09/2012 10:17

we use pour and store bags or freezer bags for bolognese sauce, curry sauce, stew, etc. Lasagne would probably be better in some sort of tray or plastic container.

Tesco sells the pour and store bags

ilovemydogandMrObama · 08/09/2012 10:18

poundshop do a really good take away type containers...

comixminx · 08/09/2012 10:18

We bought lots of click n seal tupperware from Tesco and froze the cooking in those. There are little round ones we use for single servings, and rectangular ones for two or three helpings. We did also buy a separate garage freezer mind you!

One thing we found v helpful (though it does seem a bit anal) was to do a list of what was in the freezer and in which drawer. Saves a lot of rummaging round!

comixminx · 08/09/2012 10:19

Wilkinson also had the same sort of Tupperware, or of course there's always Lakeland.

Bilbobagginstummy · 08/09/2012 10:21

Freezer bags - they take up less space so you can fit more meals in your freezer.

Scootergrrrl · 08/09/2012 10:21

Milk carton with screw lids are great for pourable things and freeze very neatly in rows Grin

ValiumQueen · 08/09/2012 10:21

I use the Pyrex dishes with a plastic lid. Most supermarkets stock them. They are quite expensive initially, but mine have been in constant use for over 20 years. I have broken the occasional dish, and a couple of the lids have split, but they have been great. Just the right portion size for two of you are doing meat only, or lasagne, or sized for one if you include pasta, rice etc. they can go in the oven, microwave and freezer, stack nicely etc.

ValiumQueen · 08/09/2012 10:23

I find plastic pots discolour and do not last that long, and bags do not work for me.

Biggem · 08/09/2012 10:30

Thanks!
I used freezer bags last time, may invest in the pour and store this time.
It's finding good sized trays that I'm struggling with...Costco does them but only in mahoosive quantities.

I use Pyrex with lids too. They last for ever & you don't have to transfer from one dish to another because they'll go in the oven, microwave, freezer, dishwasher. I use these from asda (sorry can't link from phone?!) m.direct.asda.com/Pyrex-Glass-Classic-Roasting-Dish-with-Lid---1.5L/001415883,default,pd.html
They're not that expensive (£5) & you can take them out of the freezer, defrost & then shove straight in the oven.

Am I a complete slattern? I just keep old Chinese takeaway or microwave meal containers and have amassed a sufficient number over the years to fill my freezer. I find pasta sauce pots to be perfect for storing batches of homemade pasta and vegetables for DD and takeaway tubs brilliant for lasagne or cottage pie. Best thing is they are designed for microwave so no worries for defrosting or reblasting.

doublecakeplease · 10/09/2012 08:27

Asda have 5 tupperware pots (1.8 litre I think - they have blue lids) on special for £3 - fab for lasagne, curry etc. unless you live near me and I have cleared out your local Asda of them ;-)

Startailoforangeandgold · 10/09/2012 08:49

Like SoosleQ microwaveable Chinese boxes here too!

UmamiOrange · 10/09/2012 08:54

We buy takeaway containers on eBay. If you have a hunt around, some are much more bargainous than others, and there are various sizes. They have lasted us through multiple re-uses, and don't really seem to stain (though I can't recall if they're microwaveable, and may well stain more if you heat things in them).

seeker · 10/09/2012 08:59

Foil trays like takeaway ones. Most pound shops or supermarkets have them in various sizes.

They can go straight from freezer to fridge to oven.

forevergreek · 10/09/2012 09:13

use the foil trays also for bulk cooking. also use the pyrex dishes but cant fit as many in the freezer

the foil trays are great, we freeze in single portions as often only one person eating, or just get multiple out if two. just take lid off and whole thing goes in oven, no taking out or faffing.

can get in most supermarkets

Startailoforangeandgold · 10/09/2012 09:30

Foil trays, cake cases, loaf tin liners, paper plates (DD1 uses them as palettes for acrylic pInt) are all far cheaper in pound shops than supermarket.

Startailoforangeandgold · 10/09/2012 09:31

Acrylic paint

needahandtohold · 10/09/2012 09:35

I use foil trays, especially for things like lasagne and shepherds pie. Am I the only one who washes them and reuses them?
