Lego storage solutions

DS1 has just moved from Duplo to Lego and I'm wondering how best to store it. We have quite a few sets already, including small City sets and bigger ones. There are some miniscule pieces and, apart from not wanting to lose bits, I'm quite partial to DS2 (11 months and explores voraciously with his mouth!). Anyone come across any plastic or otherwise ways of keeping the stuff together?

I think the trick is big and flat - we have the largest clear underbed storage box you can buy in ikea and it lives under ds1 bed. It means that it easy to finf bits as you swoosh it all about. We are chuck it all in one box people though - seys included.

getsetorganize.com/26-ideas-for-lego-storage-containers/

A few more ideas ( but US website so all may not be practical)

We have 2 of www.wilkinsonplus.com/plastic-storage-/storage-unit-slim-assorted-4-drawer/invt/0285503/?htxt=%2FUvRjc0xAaKk26JwgsxcsV6E2gjpK53ITJCPcypNRrR6jhjYX3SDlEUFWaOdTpLU0xVcTayKYYOc%0Aw4t9gBa9qg%3D%3D these stacked on top of each other.

They are better than some as they have drawer restraints so it doesn't come flying out when opened by an overenthusiastic child!

My parents bought a couple of these B&Q organiser cases which are perfect for sorting and storing all the fiddle bits.

notcitrus · 04/09/2012 23:37

Pigeonpie - my parents still have my Fisher-Price toys, dozens of puzzles, at least 20 cuddly toys, and half a dozen crates of other toys suitable for ds age 3. And god knows what else for when he's older!
Best the fiddly lego isn't where my mum can tread on it...

Mum of older boys confirms I need more plastic chests of drawers for all the stuff kids accumulate.

There was a massive Lego storage thread last year that had 100s of posts, try doing a MN search, I seem to remember it was a great thread.

Elizabeth ads need to be paid for Smile

For anybody interested in lego storage, a sheet inside a box works well, unless you are bit anal then lots of freezer bags with each set in!

Aaahhh I see an old thread resurrected by an advertiser :(

I have just bought some Ikea Trofast drawers for DS's Lego ( also recently moved on from Duplo). A combination of 1 rung deep and 2 rungs deep seems to work well. They are deep enough to store kits made up. DS likes to keep the kits together, someof these are in those locking Tupperware type boxes, to try and keep 21 month.old DD out.

I don't know if you sorted this yet, but an amazing woman who lives near me (lorna) has invented a 'Smatta' play tidy and store mat for lego having got sick of standing on the lego and the time it took to clear it up off the floor when it was poured out of a box. My daughters use it for craft and for playmobil, and i've given it to my nephews who love it for their lego. They have different colours so they know who's is who's. They are 6 and 10 so are old enough to do it themselves, and it takes seconds - my sister loves me for it :) One thing I would say is its not ideal if you want to keep sets together or organise the lego by size etc. You could keep takeaway boxes inside a large mat with the relevant pieces inside....
I am spreading the word cos i think its a brilliant thing - (sorry if thats not allowed???) so I know you asked the question a while ago but it may help someone else out to know about Smatta.

We just tip it out onto blankets that we have already.
We use Trofast sorted by colour, the land and road squares fit in a deep Trofast bucket, and a DIY case with lots of compartments for the people bits (sorted by heads, bodies, legs, hats, accessories).
We don't have lids for Trofast but when you tip out a box onto aforementioned blankets the dust mostly stays in the box so I give them a quick wipe then. I've never seen any little curly hairs which is a relief as we all have straight hair on our heads. Grin

Having read this thread with interest, I popped out to Wilkes and got a four drawer storage unit. Then went back to exchange it as said unit was damaged. And just before bedtime. kids thought it would be a great time to start sorting them into colours. This is a mammoth task!! Why have we started it now Confused ?!
