Good drain cleaner anyone?

My kitchen sink stinks. I don't put grease down it but it does get stinky every now and then. Sometimes bleach or soda crystals and hot water help but i would love a really good drain cleaner to sort it out a bit better than the bleach does.

Does anyone know of a good one?

We've used that Mr Muscle stuff

Buy some caustic soda. Its cheap and it works. Lethal stuff though so be careful when you use it.

Thanks guys! Ladt time i tried yo buy caustic soda I couldnt get it anywhere. Where can you buy it these days?

Just picked up some Muscle foam drain cleaner. Will see if it helps!

I bought it in wilkinsons about a month or so ago. Around £1 for the bottle iirc. Its not as easy to come by as it used to be. keep an eye in home bargains/b&m/£1 shop type places too.

I bought some verypotent stuff from Robert Dyas for my bath plug hole, big white bottle with a black rhino on the front. Cost about £10 but the salesman said if it didn't work then I needed a plumber. It's scary stuff (starts smoking on contact Shock) but good.

Turned out I did need a plumber though....

Mr Muscle gel is, in my experience, better than the foam.

washing soda will keep wastes and drains clean and is not as dangerous as caustic. remember to do the overflow as well.

I can't see much point in bleach, it might kill things while it is there, but unless you have cleaned away the grease and grime it will get recolonised with microorganisms within minutes.

It is useful to know how to remove and clean out the waste trap.

Obviously never allow anyone into your house who pours cooking fat down the sink.

dizzybiatch · 04/09/2012 11:44

pigletjohn thing is i do remove the waste trap regularly and clean out the black gunk which does stink but this stink is obviously futher down. TBH i am thinking dead mouse..... I have removed as much as is poss and cleaned it and flushed it thru many many times with hot water, plunged it etc and still there is a smell. New drainage outside too so from the various rodding sites i have all looks clear as a bell.

Mr Muscle foam has failed Sad

if the smell is coming from downstream of the trap, there is something wrong.

the trap contains a water seal whose purpose is to prevent odours or gases from the drains or sewer entering the house.

how old is your house, and has the waste or soil pipe been inexpertly tinkered with?

Check frogs/toads cant get into your drain though. A freind of mine never used anything down her drain as a frog kept getting in. She'd take him out and he'd get back in.

It's one of my many, many worries.
