Do you keep toys upstairs and downstairs?

and if so - how do you separate them? DS (aged 2 1/2) has got the majority of his toys downstairs and we're looking to try and de-clutter downstairs a bit. He's got two trofast storage things (one in the living room and one in his bedroom) but I'm wondering how to separate his toys and what type of stuff should be kept upstairs/downstairs. Should I separate his cars/lego etc into two boxes and half upstairs and half downstairs or keep them whole?

DD has the majority of her toys upstairs.

We tend to keep sets (ie Lego/playmobil) as a whole but if she wanted to play with them downstairs she is allowed to bring it down so long as it goes back up afterwards!

Her playkitchen and accessories are in the corner of the living room as is her pram. We also have an ikea box type thing which is full of odds and ends (figurines/dominos etc) that she dips in and out of.

If you have any cupboards downstairs (like under the stairs) we have used the floor and bottom two shelves for DD's board games and colouring in things. She can go help herself and it means they aren't laying around everywhere!

we have toys bloody everywhere, everywhere, in every room and nook and cranny!!!

All DS's toys are upstairs. He has a big storage unit from Ikea. If he wants to bring any downstairs during the day that's fine, but they go back upstairs at bedtime. I can't stand a house cluttered with bright colourful plastic crap.

Ideally I'd like to put all the toys upstairs but DS doesn't really play on his room at the moment as he's only two but id like to encourage him to play in his room when im upstairs putting away clothes etc. What did you do when they were small?

DD aged 8 has all hers in her room. DD aged 21 months has all hers in cupboards in the living room.

Split between his room and a corner of the dinning room.

We have quiet toys upstairs and noisier toys downstairs. We've given up our dining room as his playroom so he has more downstairs than up. My DS is also 2 so he spends little time playing in his bedroom.

If only I had an upstairs and a downstairs to worry about Envy.

We currently live in a flat so all DS's toys live in his room, but we're hoping to move to a house where we'll have this issue too. I think storage is probably the key but am interested in what other people have done.

at that age plenty were downstairs. Now hes older at 8 he has the biggest bedroom so all toys banned up there now

At 2 years old most of it is downstairs in a toybox and the wheely things are in a corner and under his little desk. Upstairs there are mostly books and some quiet stuff as he's rarely there during the day.

We have a playroom so the majority of DD's toys are in there. In her bedroom, she has two of those 2x2 IKEA expedit cubes which have a mixture of books & toys on. Toys are generally quiet ones as they're the ones she mainly plays with between waking up and getting up so she has jigsaws, fuzzy felt & some happyland as well as a tub of megablocks as we have another set of that downstairs. The upstairs & downstairs toys do get swapped over fairly regularly.

RugBugs · 19/09/2012 22:45

All the stuff requiring a large area - happyland, mega bloks, table/chairs is in our lounge (which is upstairs ha!) along with her big bookcase.

Bedtime books, most of her soft toy collection and her pooh tent are in her bedroom. She has a treasure box in our room which gets emptied all over the floor every morning i am forever treading on pinecones
