Getting smells out of drinks bottle

BitOfACyclePath · 01/09/2012 07:47

My daughter takes diluted orange squash in her drinks bottle to school. At the end of the day when she comes home no matter how much I rinse it or how much washing up liquid I use the smell lingers. Last year I had to buy a new bottle every fortnight or so as the smell was over powering. I can't afford to do that this year! Any tips for getting rid of the pong?

Why not use mineral water bottles that you buy in a pack of 6. I think water bottles do ponk, even if you only have water in them

I use sterilising tablets for drinks bottles and flasks.

Is is a squashy plastic one? I drink water and I really think that it tastes weird from the squashy ones. So I only buy the rigid plastic ones or the metal.

Milton tablets in cold water. The old fashioned way to sterilise baby bottles. Works like a treat.

That's an idea. I could switch to the sports caps bottles of water/flavoured water so I just have to recycle the bottle every day rather than wash it.

I've not managed to find a metal one that she can drink out of yet. Are they better than the plastic ones for not holding smells?

Just noticed the 2 sterilising tablets posts. I will buy some milton and give that a try. Thanks :-)

Look at Sigg water bottles

Or use Milton

Lucuzade light bottles in this house because it's often on offer and the DDs like it.

Bottles scrubbed with a bottle brush and filled with "milton solution/ actually boots tablets) if they get left too long. Replaced when they get tatty if they are not lost first.

Most of the time they just get a quick rinse because they get more sugar free squash in them tomorrow.

We gave up on proper bottles because the soft plastic takes up smells, DD2 chewed the spouts and they both lost them too often.

Poundland sell Sigg-alike bottles in the cycling bit.

I soak Tupperware in bicarbonate of soda/water to remove any food smells/stains and it works really well. I imagine it would work well on water bottles too?

I use stainless steel bottles rather than plastic.

I have just ordered some new bigger ones from here one green bottle.

I have ordered the supergreen cap which is a straw type, so they pull the little sticky out bit and the straw pops down (it is shown further down the page on the link)

Previously I had plastic ones but was worried about leaching chemicals.
