Giving the house 'a good clean'

Aworryingtrend · 31/08/2012 11:17

I'm going on Maternity Leave next week before the arrival of our first baby and I am vaguely aware I should be getting the house ready for the baby coming. Sadly the nesting instinct is yet to kick in so I am having to think about what I need to do!

My usual cleaning routine is very lazy minamilist, eg:
BEDROOMS:

Change bed
Wipe surfaces and ornaments/pictures
Clean mirrors and doorhandles/lightswitches
Hoover

KITCHEN
Wipe down surfaces, clean anyhting on worktops eg kettle/toaster
Clean outside oven/extractor/splashback
Wipe down cupboards
Bleach and clean sink
Sweep floor
Mop floor

BATHROOM
Clean toilet
Clean bath inc wiping down tiles
Clean sink inc under and around sink
sweep floor
clean floor on hands and knees

I sense there may be something more I should be doing, but what? Blush

What would you do if giving your house a 'good' clean?

TIA

Occasionally I wash skirting boards, empty and wash out fridge and food cupboards, air mattresses, get the window cleaner round, dust all the light fittings

But in a heavily pregnant state I woul do none of those!

Sit down and rest. Bugger the housework. Use the nesting urge to do something low impact like clean out your sewing box or clean the cutlery drawer. Seriously I put myself in hospital when I decided to chop down a tree during a nesting phase, when heavily pregnant.

What you describe is plenty, don't do anymore and knacker yourself out.

Make sure the baby's room is ready, you've bought all the toiletries, nappies, his/her clothing is washed, your hospital bag is packed and there's loads of food in the house.

Then sleep as much as you can, go for coffee/lunch with friends, go to the cinema, watch crappy daytime t.v with a family bag of maltesers all to yourself - just enjoy the time because believe me those things will be pipe dreams once bubba comes along!!

If you've written a list like that - you are nesting!

I convinced myself last time I wasn't really nesting, even as I scrubbed behind the toilets...

That's loads, OP. Seriously, take it easy.

GravyHadALumpyMashBaby · 31/08/2012 12:59

YY what everyone else said! I'm not pregnant and don't clean like your list! Just make sure you have everything you want for the baby and pack your hospital bag - then enjoy your time away from work before your little one comes. Smile

I agree with other posts - rest while you can.

Also, I wished that I had made / bought easy meals to freeze and pull out when needed, as I found it hard to have the time / energy for making healthy meals. Prevents a lot of takeaways.

You could also stock your cupboard with soups etc and maybe set up a shopping order online, so its easy to just click order now after the birth.

Best wishes for your leave and birth!

Thanks everyone you have made me feel better about spending the last two days doing very little! I have made a list (think nesting has definitely kicked in, its lists a go-go here) of meals to batch cook and freeze so once I'm on leave I'll start doing that.

Thanks again.

That sounds fine. You are doing loads. However Martha Stewarts website has checklists for seasonal big cleans that are quite useful. Wink

You should be on your hands and knees scrubbing skirting boards, you massive slacker!
