Y'know, the cheepo Daisy dishwasher tabs are really just as good as the expensive 'platinum' ones

I made the change a month ago cus I was sick of paying through the nose to wash my dishes and, as long as your salt and rinse aid is topped up, they're just as good as the other kind.

Daisy dishwasher tabs: £2.50/ box
Expensive Rip-u-Off tabs: £7/ box

Simples.

We use the Aldi ones and they are better than the big brands.

BikeRunSki · 31/08/2012 11:04

never used salt, never had a problem. we do have very soft water though..

NoComet · 31/08/2012 11:07

Lidal's and ASDA's work perfectly well.

tara0202 · 31/08/2012 11:10

Can I ask a question of all you experienced dishwasher owners please? I am soon to be a dishwasher owner (JOY) and have never had one.

What do you do with salt and rinse aid? As in normal salt? Where do you put it?! I know I'm thick but I don't know what I am doing (apart from now buying cheaper tablets!).

onyx72 · 31/08/2012 11:11

I live in north Oxfordshire and the water here is harder than it is in london; you can't drink it straight out of the tap here.
Anyway, I use salt, rinse aid and Sainsburys Basics tablets. The 5 in 1 tablets left my glasses all cloudy.

FreeButtonBee · 31/08/2012 11:16

Tara

You need to take a look at the manual (should be able to find a PDF online if the original isn't there). The salt is special dishwasher salt - I normally get supermarket own brand 1kg bags. My dishwasher has a screw top in the bottom under the lower rack which you unscrew and then pour the salt into the reservoir. I use a jug as the bags go all sloppy and spill loads of salt oer the bottom.

Rinse Aid goes in a little round turn thing next to the container for the dishwasher powder. Unscrew the little knob, take it out and pour in rinse aid. Mine also has a dial (from 1 - 8) and the harder the water the higher the dial needs to be.

We use tesco or sainsburys value tabs (with seperate salt/rinse aid) and actually find them better than the expensive tabs.

tara0202 · 31/08/2012 16:01

Freebuttonbee Thank you! Thanks
never thought about the manual, I knew I was a bit thick

BananaPie · 31/08/2012 19:41

What's the point of the tablets if you have to use separate salt and rinse aid? We just buy the powder - much cheaper!

Fluffycloudland77 · 31/08/2012 20:17

There just marketing arent they? another way to extract money from us.

reastie · 31/08/2012 20:48

banana I think it still works out cheaper even buying 3 separate things. The main reason we buy the cheap ones isn't actually the fact it's cheaper though it's as we find they work better - we tried finish/fairy/loads of other dw tabs and they all struggled to get the eggy smell out of everything. Don't have that problem any more Grin

oreocrumbs · 01/09/2012 08:14

I have just down graded from Aldi Magnum d/w tablets to their Classic d/w tablets and noticed no difference at all. Both clean much better that Finish IMO. The Classic are quite a lot cheaper than the Magnum too!

Frontpaw · 01/09/2012 08:46

We have crappy London water. When I have been out of salt and tried to sneak in an extra wash, glasses all come out with a white deposit on them. I suppose soft water doesn't do this.

I usually use Daisy tabs and Tesco salt. I have a bottle of vinegar to try as rinse aid once I need to refill it.

nkf · 01/09/2012 08:50

Oh, good because I've just ordered some.

nkf · 01/09/2012 08:52

What about Calgon for the washing machine? Necessary? Anything cheaper?

Frontpaw · 01/09/2012 08:54

I haven't used calgon and the washing machine, boiler and dishwasher are all 11 years old. Oh god, they are all going to break at the same time, aren't they?!,

PigletJohn · 01/09/2012 09:01

"Which" challenged the Calgon advertising because there is no evidence that it does any good.

Hopeforever · 01/09/2012 09:02

Do the Aldi tablets come wrapped in a little individual packet that you have to remove prior to putting them in the powder container?

I use the expensive ones that have a dissolving cover but need to save money however i am very very lazy :(

Hopeforever · 01/09/2012 09:03

As for Calgon, never used it, live in a hard water area, both the dishwasher and washing machines are over 10 years old

lottiegarbanzo · 01/09/2012 09:03

The Asda 'green' ones were a Which best buy and cheap too.

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/09/2012 16:33

I tried vinegar as rinseaid but it didnt work for me so I went back to the one from savers that wasnt tested on animals.

Frontpaw · 01/09/2012 17:42

Sainsburys has a 3 for 2 offer on their own brand rinse aid at the moment. And quite a few fruit and veg for £1.
Tesco has 4 tins napoli chopped toms for £2.44. Cheapo brands are just more juice than tomatoes! Ciro are very nice and often do special offers.

I love a bargain!

RaspberryLemonPavlova · 01/09/2012 20:20

Aldi tablets do have packets, but they open very easily. I snap them in half unless the dishes are very dirty. Very soft water here though.
