Help! Tiled work top which is horrible...

The kitchen units are country-style and look like they are carpenter-made and just need painting (I will get a professional in) but the work top is a combination of tiling and laminate and is yuk, it really lets the units down...just wondering what to do with it? I want to put a ceramic sink in too. Am uterly clueless about this sort of thing, do you think anything can be done???

You should be able to remove all of the worktops and replace with something else.

Of course, what kind of worktops would you like to have?

Is the ceramic sink you want the same style and size as the existing one? If so should not be a problem, if not you may have to alter the unit under it slightly.

I know they are high maintenance but I would like a solid wood oak work top...is that crazy?!? Not really into marble, couldn't afford it any way!!!! The tiles ate inset into the work top with a lip around it...I just find it difficult to imagine how that would come off with out damaging the units underneath??? Plus who would you need to do it, a carpenter or a kitchen fitter??? I am so clueless it is untrue!!!

Discrete, have got as far as deciding what size or style ceramic sink yet...at the moment it has a good sized single sink and drainer over a generous double into underneath.

Have= haven't!

No, solid wood is fine.

The whole worktop will come off, it will just be sitting on the units below. That's both the tiles and the stuff underneath it with the lip, all of it, leaving just the units.

Then you put a brand new worktop of the same thickness (unless you are OK to re-tile/redo the splashback area)

Thank you discrete, the splash back area is only made up of about 6 or so tiles as it is under a window so I don't think it would be a big job if it did need removing. Thank you so much for getting back to me, I'm relieved I'm not stuck with the work top forever!!!! Grin

Of course you are not! Fitted kitchens come in pieces, and are basically stacked together like Lego, so you can change any bit you like whenever you want.

Good luck with your remodelling!
