Cleaning an oven that could be beyond help!

seabuckthorn · 29/08/2012 19:35

The oven we have inherited in our rental place is in desperate need of cleaning.
It really is utterly filthy.
I can't afford someone to come and clean it as much as I want to!

What should I be doing? Ovenmate? Ovenpride? Baking soda?

Thanks
SB

Ovenpride. £3.99 in Morrisons or cheaper in Home Bargains I think.

It's brilliant. Leave shelves etc in bag with the cleaner gunk overnight and all the crud just hoses off next day (advise doing it in the garden). Also use cleaner inside oven and on glass door - I left it on for a couple of hours and that was enough, but for an uber clean, leave overnight.

Tis amazing stuff. And I don't work for them....I was just genuinely thrilled at how my oven came up like new. Grin

Barkeepers friend, mixed as a thick paste with water, spread on and leave for a few minutes, then scour off.

Oven pride is a miracle. I have every intention of doing mine this weekend.

Oven pride is great, although if the house is rented I would expect it to be in a good clean condition, tell the landlord you want it professionally cleaned

seabuckthorn · 30/08/2012 02:54

Oven Pride it is then!
Does it stink by the way? Am pregnant and don't want to stink the house out? Will opening the windows be enough whilst applying?
Thanks all.

I don't recall it being stinky but prob best to open windows anyway as it is pretty hardcore stuff. Put plenty of newspaper down when using it in case any drips. I did mine when I was pregnant too when I started maternity leave!

You need to tell the landlord. It should not be like that.

MrsPnut · 30/08/2012 06:58

I use oven pride on the metal racks and I use Lakeland oven mate on the actual oven. I find it's thicker and works better.

Leave it on overnight and then use lots and lots of kitchen towel to clear out the gunk before using cloths and hot water to finish off.

Make sure you note the state of the oven on the inventory, take a photo, that way the landlord can't make out it was spotless when you moved in. Oven Pride very good, had to use on an oven we had in a rental property.

ThisisaSignofthetimes · 30/08/2012 07:23

When I did the racks, I left them outside in the bag, I think you keep the oven door shut so fumes are minimised.

pumpkinsweetie · 30/08/2012 07:23

Oven Pride is the best, it even comes with gloves & a bag for your shelves, you leave them to soak in the solution inside the bag, rinse and they come out like new and you can use more of the same solution on your oven, leave overnight or for a few hours and all the dirt just wipes away when rinsed.

Wrigglebum · 30/08/2012 07:36

Oven pride is good but a rental oven should not be in that state. Talk to the landlord or agent and if they won't send round a cleaner then take pictures and put it in writing that it was filthy and you will not be cleaning it on moving out.

One place we moved into was really dirty (oven smelt rancid) but the contract said we had to have a professional clean on leaving. I told them to either send someone immediately so we could eat, or to put it in writing that we would not be required to get a professional clean on leaving.

I cleaned it when pregnant, just make sure you open all your windows and use gloves. If you don't want to risk it then bicarbonate of soda to scrub then rinsed out with vinegar does a good job too.

If you can afford it, get someone in. We used Cookerburra and the difference was amazing.

We inherited a cooker that was in such a bad state. You couldn't open the door during cooking without the smoke alarm going off and it smelt just awful. The glass in the door was so bad, you could even see inside

For £60, Cookerburra made it look like new in under two hours. Far less hassle and a much better job than I could ever have done. I just wish I'd got someone in three years ago when we moved in! (Procrastination queen, me).

There are loads of cooker cleaning firms out there - if it's an option, I'd say give it a go.

Ah. Just see that you're in a rental property. Get you landlord to pay for it!
