How do you store seperate lego sets?

Hi - I want to get my son a few lego sets but I assume once the nice box has been ripped opened I have to find somewhere to store and have to keep the sets seperate. Are there any special ways to do this? A huge plastic box is not going to do it as there are not that many pieces. How do people store the sets seperately? Thanks very much.

It's a v contentious subject! I think lego is for plying with. Some people think it's for keeping in nice shiny boxes.

Ask the kid - if he wants it kept carefully in separete boxes with detailed instructions, the fine.

Otherwise - chuck in box, watch the amazing creations.

We have this:

www.box4blox.com/

It's ace (expensive though).

And it doesn't help your problem about keeping stuff separate (don't bother trying as everyone else say).

So I haven't really helped. But what it does do is get the children to pick up the Lego, put it into said box and shake it so the little pieces and big pieces get sorted.

thanks so much - love the box4blox thing.

DS2 is one of those rare children who likes order - so our lego sets are in zip plastic bags including instructions. Then we have an enormous couple of plastic boxes to hold all the bags. We also have basic lego bricks stored in a seperate box, and most usefully a 'spare bits' box where we put everything that we can't identify - it means the DCs have somewhere to go when an urgent bit is stopping them from remaking a model.

Apologies for promising a link and then disappearing!

Can't find the toolbox we have got but here is something similar - DH says fishing tackle boxes are also highly suitable lego boxes Grin It also has a couple of small lidded compartments in the lid aswell so plenty of 'sorting' options.

We keep DS lego in a very large under storage box that slides under his bed. He has the Lego Head that he uses to bring some lego downstairs to play with. He has all the instruction booklets for his sets but once he has built it once the pieces get mixed in together and DS then builds what he wants. Except the lego train set it is nearly always made up.

We are in Florida for Xmas and DS will be 8 then and is spending his birthday at Legoland Florida he has warned us we will need a spare suitcase to bring home all the Lego he is planning on getting Shock I really don't think we have much more room for more lego lol

I was just about to post to ask about lego storage recommendations and thought I better search first in case someone already asked...good job I did! A friend has the box4blox thing and says she loves it and it helps her DS enjoy the tidying up too. By the looks of the thread, nothing does a perfect job but I think I might give this product a try. If anyone else has anything to say about the box4blox, do post your thoughts as I'd love to hear them before I get to the buying stage. Thanks!

hi, well, we don't have masses of lego, but last weekend I got a mid-sized storage box, and then bagged up all the made-up lego sets that were around, broke them up, put in zip lock bag with kit number on front. There is also a bag with all the instruction books in. Then we have a blue lego box, and all the non-sorted stuff is in there. My ds1 (8) prefers kits to 'freestyling' and said he would like to keep them as sets. Ds2 (5) however, likes to freestyle, so can keep both of them happy. Not sure how long this approach will last tho!

Open the boxes carefully, flatten and keep them. In years to come, if you want rid of the lego it will sell on ebay for much more if it has boxes and original instructions.

lovechoc · 06/09/2012 17:37

Bung it all in one box.

Beamur · 06/09/2012 17:42

Big box, mix it up.
Despite what the kit is, my DD always builds the same thing - buildings - usually farms, occasionally zoos, sometimes houses - then fills it up with little plastic farm animals/schliech figures etc.
