induction hob

Just posted on another thread, but this might be a better fit.

I'm looking to buy an oven. A forever cooker.

I want six hobs, two ovens and it to be entirely self cleaning. Or, come with a little fairy who'll do it for me.

Shop showed me induction hobs - I've never heard of such magic before.

Fast, cheap to run, adjustable like gas, and completely flat that a wee skoosh of jiff will clean?

What's the catch? Who's got one - is it worth the money?

We have one! I love it! IME it's as fast as a kettle at boiling a pan of water and the controls are instant for turning up and down (like gas).

Only catch for us is that we had to buy new saucepans as our old ones didn't work but I'm thinking about having one in our forever home.

HTH

I have just got induction and yes love the fact that it sits flush to the worktop (inset) so no dirt around the edge, no knobs so easily wiped clean.

The downside so far is the size of pan has to fit the ring, and last night I had the veg steaming on the front ring of the hob, while mince in a smaller pan at the back that needed stirring. Bit of a nuisance but I'm sure I will be able to get my head round it after a few weeks.

nankypeevy · 23/08/2012 19:53

The size of pan has to fit the ring? So, if you need to use a frying pan you need to use the big ring?

What happens if you use a small pan on a big ring - will it only heat the area of the pan, or will it be all burny dangerous?

Am really wanting one now - I can see teh kids being able to cook on it now, and as drunken teenagers without burning down the house...

We have one and I love it. I too did not believe in its magicness but it's been great. We had to buy some new pans but that was no biggy. Ours works whatever pan you use - don't have to fit the size to the plate.

Beanbagz · 23/08/2012 19:58

I have one and i love it!

It's really quick to heat up, looks stylish and is very easy to clean. The only trouble was it didn't work with some of my older pans so i had to persuade DH that we needed some nice new ones Grin

Mine's a 4 ring one and they are quite well spread out. However there's times when i need that extra ring so with hindsight i would have gone for a 5 ring one.

Wolfiefan · 23/08/2012 20:03

Had one HATED it. Got new gas one. Not controllable enough for me. (Pasta water boiling over because I didn't turn it down before it started to boil). It beeped every time I touched it. I kept locking the blasted thing. DH kept putting stuff on it (like plastic bags) while it was hot (assume he felt it didn't look like a hob!). And if you like certain pans (they may not work on it) or stir frying (can't get it hot enough) don't bother.
Sorry rant over!

more · 23/08/2012 20:06

I had one, and I really did not like it. I much prefer gas, which I feel I have much more control over how big the flame is.
The pans don't have to fit perfectly, but you can't just use any odd pans.
I love the idea of it, but the reality just didn't work for me.

SillyStrokeSensibleMum · 23/08/2012 20:06

Love induction hobs! Responsive and so easy to clean. Would never want to go back to gas.

dikkertjedap · 23/08/2012 21:30

They are the absolutely best hobs you can have IMO. You may need new pans though and you may need to get used to cooking on them as they are so quick and respond so quick to adjustments. However, they are simply brilliant.

RandomMess · 23/08/2012 21:32

I have an induction hob and love it, only had gas before, so easy to clean - Mr Muscle and wipe with kitchen roll!

Got new pans from TK Maxx Smile, use hob top kettle now as well Smile

nankypeevy · 23/08/2012 21:40

Right, that's it. Sold, one induction hob. It's the cleaning that's done it for me, and the insistence on new pans I bloody hate our crappy tefal

do you all have stainless steel pans, or fancy super dooper le crueset?

OP posts:
workshy · 23/08/2012 21:46

are you getting pyrolitic ovens then to go with your super dooper hob?

when you buy just check if you are putting the hob directly over the oven, that your worktop is thick enough

induction hobs sit lower and are deeper than standard hobs, and even within the same brand, they won't all sit on top of the oven

RandomMess · 23/08/2012 21:48

I just went to TK Maxx with a magnet and picked the size and type of pans I knew I would use that were magnetic Grin

shineypenny · 23/08/2012 21:57

You can put a small pan on a large ring and only the part under the pan will heat up, so it is completely safe to touch the uncovered part of the ring.

Place a large pan on a small ring and, obviously, only the part sat on the ring will receive heat.

I love my induction hob, very efficient, really easy to clean. On the odd occasion that a pan boils over, just pick it up and the heat is automatically cut. Just wipe the water away with a tea towel, or even kitchen roll - it will not catch fire, wipe the bottom of the pan and replace.

Don't buy a Neff one. My DM has had nothing but problems with hers - it switches itself off part way through cooking and it is near impossible to switch back on again. Google it - it's a known problem.

Dollydowser · 23/08/2012 22:06

Thanks for letting me know I can use a small pan on a big ring.

The other thing to think about is electricity supply. We only had one 32 amp cooker suppply by our cooker, and no means of running a new supply to the kitchen. The hob needs its own one, as does a pyrolytic oven. In the end we had to go for a lesser oven that was 13 amp (I think, the exact details escape me).

nankypeevy · 23/08/2012 22:26

Crikey. Had to google pyrolitic ovens - seems my ignorance knows no bounds!

I popped into a local shop who sell rangemaster ovens. The oven bit was electric - but if it's self cleaning that might explain the COST!

Pyrolitic - that's the teeny tiny cleaning fairy, right?

I've just cleaned my gas oven with "oven magic" couple of quid out of sainsbo - no smell, just leave to soak overnight, amazeballs clean. Eight years of grease and crud (well, I did give it a token wipe every now and then, but couldn't bear the Mr Muscle stuff) gone. Just like that! and, I'm happy I can forget about it for another eight years.

So, do you like your self cleaning ovens - does it work?

OP posts:
workshy · 23/08/2012 22:32

self cleaning ovens don't properly clean

pyrolitic incinerate everything and are a joy to behold!

workshy · 23/08/2012 22:33

CDA do very good appliances btw -worth a look (and no I don't work for them)

princelypurpleparrot · 23/08/2012 22:50

I MISS MY INDUCTION HOB!!!! . We've just moved and now have an utterly shite electric hob. We had no gas in our old place so getting an induction hob was a complete revelation.

They are fab when you have kids as the rings cool straightaway, and if there's no pan on them they won't turn on.

Mine beeped (as a lot do I believe) whenever you put anything on it that wasn't a pan, so it couldn't be used as an extension of the worksurface. The beeping annoyed me I admit, but it was worth it.

It's worth getting on with a gas wok burner if you can, as they aren't good at all for stirfrying (we did it, but used a large frying pan).

And we already had Le Creuset pans (from an outlet shop so not extortionately expensive), although MIL had an old frying pan that happened to work aswell.

We had a pyrolitic oven too, but didn't use the function often enough so it's not as clean as it should be now, ooops!

Boondoggle · 23/08/2012 23:07

Induction is amazing, you won't look back

Beanbagz · 23/08/2012 23:44

Pyrolytic ovens are wonderful. You have to have one of those too. Had one in a previous house. LOVED IT!

Or you could have a steam oven? Have one of those now (plus regular oven) and we have lovely healthy steamed veg every day!

CointreauVersial · 23/08/2012 23:52

Love my induction hob; so fast I was burning things until I got used to its speediness.

But ours is a cheapo, and doesn't like it when I use all four rings at once; lots of pulsing and clicking.

Soooo easy to clean, though.

TodaysAGoodDay · 23/08/2012 23:56

Absolutely worth every penny. The man in the shop said in ten years there will only be induction hobs, nothing else. Why not lead the bandwagon, rather than joining it in ten years or so?

My induction hob is amazing, so fast to respond (seconds, really) and cooks very evenly. The man in the shop (yes, him again) said if I used the cooker for two years, then the third year was free, electricity-speaking, he meant it cost two thirds to run compared to a 'normal' cooker.

Please get one, you will never regret it!

PorkyandBess · 24/08/2012 00:00

We have today ordered a range with an induction hob. I hope to agree with positive comments v soon as it was a bit wedgy.

nankypeevy · 24/08/2012 07:24

A steam oven?

Eh?

More googling...
