Rug stuck to wooden floor

Hi
I have sanded and varnished wooden floors. I also have a cheap mat with a foam back (looks like a waffle IYKWIM).

Someone must have washed the floor and put the mat back while the floor was still wet. Or water has been spilt on the mat and has soaked through.

However it happened, the mat is now stuck to the floor. I've tried to pull it off really gently it but leaves bits of rubber stuck hard to the wood (in a ridiculous waffle pattern!).

I've tried to scrape a few bits off but its going to be a nightmare if I have to do the whole thing like this. I'm now panicking as to best way to deal with this....

Any advice?

Just realised I wrote "foam back" but the back of the rug is actually rubber...

Anyone?

it might not be caused by water. It might just be the rubber sticking to the varnish, possibly after warming in the heat.

If it was water, wetting it again might unstick it.

Varnish is more sticky when new, and rubber perishes with age.

I don't know a way to get it off. If you know what sort of varnish it is, that might help.

Thanks for the advice Smile

There isn't much vanish on the floor and it's been there for years so I'll try wetting it again and see what happens!

This happned to me - our floor was old and varnished. It was the non-slip underlay I put down to stop rug slipping that caused the problem. Anyway, I used a flat bladed plastic spatula to scrape off most of it and then used Sticky Stuff Remover (I know Lakeland sell it but you may find it cheaper elsewhere) with complete succcess. I know it might not work on every type of floor but it did on ours - good luck :)

Meant to add that this stuff is very oily so maybe that's what lifted it off but our floor was highly varnished so oil didn't spoil it.
