I bought a vax carpet washer last week and cleaned my carpets. It can't have got all the water out because th e carpets smell damp -

Can anyone give me tips on how to get rid of the damp smell -it's driving me mad.

Open as many windows as you can for as long as you can to air the place. Do the carpets still feel at all damp? Can you use the vax to suck any more water out (not sure how they work!).

You could try - closing all the windows, putting the heating on for a bit to evaporate any more damp and then opening the windows to get rid of all the damp air. Repeat until dry!

If everything feels really dry, try experimenting with sprinkling some bi-carb on one of the carpets and leaving overnight in a room with doors and windows closed. The bicarb is supposed to absorb odours. If the room smells better than other rooms without bicarb then use on all the carpets. Vacuum up bicarb in the morning.

Is it just damp or could it be other odours that the vax activated more by damping it all ( eg from dogs or other pets) If so you could try re-doing one of the carpets and see if that gets rid of more smell!

If you sprinkle bicarb of soda on, leave for 20 mins then vacuum it up the carpets should be ok. I also have a vax cleaner and have to do this every time!

I second neatfreak's suggestion, had this problem after using a rug doctor at our old house.

is your vax one of the ones that have the trigger on the handle? if so, its the trigger that releases the water so you need to go over the carpet again without the trigger being held down. and if it's still quite wet then do it again without holding the trigger. the more you do this, the less damp will remain.

Once done you need to put your heating on and get some ventilation too. unless you have a dehumidifier which is even better.
