Maggots in the dustbin HELP ....

Lifebeginsat41 · 21/08/2012 10:58

We have maggots in our dustbin, the one that we have to put food and garden waste in. I have cleaned the bin with disinfectant but they are back. Any suggestions please. Thank you.

try pouring tons of table salt over them, I seem to remember this working for me

OnlyWantsOne · 21/08/2012 10:59

Is the bin empty at the moment??

OnlyWantsOne · 21/08/2012 11:00

Try bleach and several kettles of boiling water.

Lifebeginsat41 · 21/08/2012 11:01

No its not due to be emptied until next week. I washed it out the last time it was emptied.

A hedgehog is your friend Grin Once emptied, just before dusk lay the bin on it's side any passing hedgehog will scent the maggots and will hoover them up. Spent a good hour watching a hedgehog doing just that last year when my bin was infested. Had no re occurrence since.

Bleach and boiling water.
I had them in my landfill waste bin (actually it was my neighbours bin and they swapped them round) after it had been emptied though. And washed them down the surface water drain on our drive.

The Hedgehog solution sounds much nicer than bleach!

Maggots are baby flies. Flies are no doubt being attracted to the food waste in the hot weather and are laying their eggs in there. Best thing to do is to make sure the lid is always on properly to stop the flies getting in.

And this is why i dont recycle food... yuck!

Lifebeginsat41 · 21/08/2012 11:49

Nancerama the lid is always on and this isn't the first time we have had maggots recently, we also had them in the colder weather too!

Sorry OP. I've just seen how patronising my post was.

We don't get food waste collected, but we only get our waste collected every 2 weeks and we get fly problems. Sometimes putting a brick on the lid to really weigh it down helps - the little menaces can squeeze through the smallest of gaps.

I think the maggots and the like are a good thing - they are supposed to help break the waste down properly, but it's not nice having them outside your front door.

Lifebeginsat41 · 21/08/2012 12:30

Nancerama - No worries Smile

We only get our 'green bin' garden / food waste collected every 2 weeks too. Due to the design of the houses in the road all the bins are neatly situated opposite the front door which is great for throwing stuff away but not good when we get maggots. I will try the bleach and salt and it that doesn't work then will go to the hardware store to get something stronger.
