How to clean brass looking taps

We have fake gold/brass taps on the sinks and bath. The colour is going and I was wondering how best to clean them. We can't afford to replace all the sinks atm. TIA

they will be laquered to protect the finish. The laquer also protects the tarnish. If you strip the laquer off you will have to keep polishing them, as they will tarnish every day. It is possible to take them off, polish, and relacquer but it will be as much work as taking them off and fitting new ones.

Chromed brass is the most hard wearing.

are they mixer taps or singles? Is there a shower mixer too?

does your water come from a tank in the loft?

you can change taps without buying a new bath and basin. Do you know anyone willing to contort themselves under a bath?

how much would you be willing to pay for a new set of bath and basin taps?

The best thing for cleaning brass is a lemon , just rub it on and wait .. works a treat.

while the taps are coated with laquer, no cleaner will touch the brass.

For as long as possible, keep the laquer in place as it will prevent tarnishing. You are basically just cleaning a varnish, not the metal.

The instructions for laquered taps always say "use no polish or abrasives, clean with a soft damp cloth"

Once you have worn away all the laquer, you can polish them every day like plain brass, or you can polish once and relaquer.

If they are gold-plated, keep the gold-plating for as long as possible by not polishing it off.

Another butt in - does anyone know where to find the replacement 'hot' and 'cold' discs from. We have manky gold taps with the discs missing!

no, but if you are searching they are called "tap indexes" or more properly "tap indices."

I'm sure the factories that turn them out get paid about 10p per thousand but they are much dearer retail
